Very Newbie Question - how do you even monetize this shit?

Hey there,

So I've been reading wickedfire for quite a while now, trying to figure out how you actually monetize everything you guys talk about.

I feel like I am missing a piece of the puzzle. Granted, I haven't tried this stuff on my own yet, but I want to make sure I've asked all the right questions before I start.

Basically, this is what I understand so far:

You buy a domain, build out a site, set up backlinks, it looks awesome, start sending traffic... and then what? Are you actually selling a product? In order to do this, do you have to sell something, a product or a service? Or is your return purely from other adsense ads on your site...? And where does a niche come into play? I think I have several concepts somewhat mixed up.

I'm sure someone has written something about this in the past, and there's probably many articles I've overlooked. So if you want to reply with a link to an answer or more articles I could read, I would really really appreciate it.

Sell someone else's product for a commission.

Sell your own product for full value.

Produce a product and let other's sell it for a commission.

Display ads for a CPM (cost per thousand impressions)

Display ads for a CPC (cost per click)

Collect leads and sell them to someone in your niche.

Send leads to a CPA (cost per acquisition) company who then sells the leads.

Show your traffic proof and sell ads directly to other webmasters.

It goes on and on...
 
Ahh, ok. I've come up with a similar list, but I wasn't sure if any of those answers were correct.

There are so many possibilities to monetize a site. Oftentimes, you will have to experiment quite a bit to find the best way to monetize it. You might have to try CPA offers, AdSense and various affiliate networks to see which will be the best match for your site.
 
Great list there!

Basically, once you have a site and it looks great, you can monetize it according to that list. BUT if you are going to be selling your own product, you have to make sure it fits into your site and its niche.

A niche, in VERY layman's terms, is like the topic or category your site belongs to. For example, the site may be in the Mountain Biking niche. That means your site is all about Mountain Bikes. Maybe you have Amazon reviews which link back to Amazon products that give you a commission when someone buys the product. Maybe you have AdSense ads that gives you a commission when someone clicks on them. Maybe you are signed up to be an affiliate with a Mountain Bike retail company and every sale referred by your site gives you income. Etc. etc.

The key to all of this, however, is GOOD content. Without that, site visitors aren't likely to stay, which is not good. You want the visitors there. This will increase your page rank, which will increase your visitors, and increase the chances of your making money.
