Excellent marketing and free publicity for all parties involved. As someone once said: "Say anything you want about me as long as you spell my name right".

I'm waiting for the "undisclosed settlement" - it may take a while though, it's just to good to pass out too quickly.

While I would agree with that to some extent, this case isn't about free publicity. YouTube or Viacom don't need it.

This is about YouTube's blantant copyright infringement. I LOVE Youtube, but there are so many unauthorized clips hosted on their site that big lawsuits were inevitable.

He he :) Are you serious in your statement that "YouTube or Viacom don't need publicity" ?? Have you seen Coca Cola recently stopping all ads cause they are so popular already?

There is never too much publicity.

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist" :rasta:

yup... had to see this coming.

when you think about it, it's no different than napster. sure, there are a ton of clips on there which SHOULD be freely distributed from Indie artists. But, half of them are obvious infringements which the original owner would not want freely available.

Not only is google/you tube making money from hosting these unauthorized clips, but many people here are, too (web developers). it's free content that we're not really supposed to have. it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

viacom tried to buy youtube didn't they, also google set aside a big pot of cash when they bought youtube(alledgedly) for court cases i read somewhere.
I want youtube to win but I can see this ending in an out of court settlement or deal.

Actually I think Google paid off a bunch of potential lawsuits in advance of buying YouTube. They basically negotiated with several of the big media companies to buy their silence, at least temporarily.

I suspect Viacom was not a party to that.

YouTube and Viacom are completely different animals than Coca-Cola and their business.

How much advertising did you see YouTube doing to get to the 4th most popular site on the internet? zero.
