We should have a contest

Hey WFers.

I want to try something, mostly out of boredom. Here's what I'm thinking:

Starting on January 1st, we each start building a website. Doesn't really matter what the website is about. For the entire month, we build, promote, and monetize the sites. At the end of the month, we sell our websites and see whose site sells for the most. Proceeds go to some charity. I was thinking Child's Play.

Whoever's site sells for the most wins the contest. I will personally send a Shamwow, a pedegg, or a snuggie to whoever wins.

Rules:

  • You can't spend any more than the domain registration fee on the site.
  • If you disagree with the above rule, we need to determine a good amount for maximum spend. The point here is to make it so anybody can win the coveted snuggie, not just the power players who can drop $2,000 on content writers.
  • You can monetize your site anyway you want: ebooks, adwords, porn, whatever.
If you think one month is too short, let me know.

Id say a month is to short to sell a site. It would have no PR and it would be hard to prove income with only a months revenue. Nice idea but it would take like 6months to do.

Eh, Johncow.com did it back in May and managed to sell a site for $1,500. I'm not sure how much of that was due to hype though.

I dunno, 3 months?

it's a good idea... 3 months. but why put limitations on it? let someone drop $2k on their site and then sell it for as much or more... it's all for charity (as you said above). don't have the bank roll to compete, get creative. rules should state that once entered, the site must be put up for sale (although developer can bid to buy it back). otherwise, you're just cheating the kids!

Well, it's for charity, but I wanted to see who on this board can really build a site out of nothing and sell it, and who is talking out of their ass.

But yeah, if you guys think a contest with charity as the primary goal is a good idea, that works for me.

I would LOVE to participate and watch a contest like this. Only thing is I would have to believe in people not doing anything out of order.

Count me in, anyways. 3 months to go.

I have been waiting for a contest like this as I am not one to start something like this. I am in and will agree to whatever terms there are as long as its foolproof so others dont screw it up. I think domain reg only would fly well and would make it more fun however, What about blackhat tactics? How far is too far and will it be allowed? I am asking since I know this will be asked anyhow.

Hell, do whatever you want. Just remember that we're doing this for SICK kids with CANCER.

I'll create a blog or something for this in the morning. Remember, don't start until January 1st.

Are we going to make a case study out of this?

Well, anyhow... I am gonna put all my steps out in the open.... anyone else?
this way we can also learn a bit while at it.

I agree with your original rules about creating this out of nothing. It's for charity but it's also a contest and the fun is seeing who can do what on a minimum budget. Either way I would love to do a contest like this. it seems like fun.

I'm down, but I talk out of my ass so don't expect to much monies for the kids. I'll do my best though :)

Sounds like a good idea, count me in!

I think its a good idea that all participants register a new domain, simply means we all start on an even keel.

And I agree that all our methods should be on the table in a case study format to help anyone.

Its a great cause aswell, but should we not put say 10% of all sales into a kitty for the eventual winner? Might encourage a few more newbies to join in.

Great idea!

Also, you should restrict incoming traffic/links from that persons other sites. Not sure how that would be done, but that could give a 'power player' a big advantage.

Also, not so sure that porn/adult sites should be allowed of the charity is for kids with cancer...

huh?

We are gonna sell the sites, the money goes to charity. Doesn't matter if the money was paid for a porn site.

I'm down with it, sounds like fun for a good cause. I'll make my methods of promotion open source also, just like emp.

Should all the sites be sold at one place (sitepoint/ebay?), or just however we can profit the most. Also, can we buy aged domains? I start very few projects on new domains these days.

I'm ok with people using big networks to promote the site but to sell these things, we must have a level playing field. I suggest a single "broker" to handle the sale of all sites ... hopefully someone with good standing in the community in which the sale is made.

ooh yea, and remind me in 2 weeks so I don't forget about this shit.

Sounds good. How about letting the winner pick the charity as further incentive? Not knocking Child's Play, but there's people here in countries it doesn't cover and we all have personal preferences when it comes to charities.
