Hey, all. Freakin' sweet forum.

I'm the webmaster for a multi-station radio group in an area w/ a population of 200,000 and a sizable share of the listening audience. I'm trying to figure out a way to increase monetization of the site while not overwhelming the site visitor w/ too much advertising.

Ideas so far include:
  1. adsense (strategic placement, not on homepage, most likely on single.php)
  2. firefox affiliate ("Download the web browser of choice of your favorite DJ - it's fast, safe, secure")
  3. azoogle (going to use the hot topic poll idea SeoDave talks about here)
  4. Amazon affiliate ('Now Playing' widget has direct link to Amazon, top 10 lists all have links to 'Buy it Now!')
  5. eBay affiliate (widget that shows items relevant to station site, i.e. rock tshirts, posters, signed guitars, etc)
  6. Plan on perusing the other Commission Junction opportunities and using ClickBank in a very limited fashion.
  7. We have local advertisers with display/banner advertising rotating on the site.
Site content: dj blogs, video blog on all sites (monetization idea here), on-air contests / promotions, music news, typical radio station fare - but will be more SEO than typical station sites w/ an emphasis content generation in an effort to generate more traffic from outside the listening area.

What are your thoughts about the current traffic levels (200K page views, unknown uniques until site redesign)? The sites are averaging around two (2) page views per session in their current incarnation. I am switching them all over to WordPress and using WP like a CMS. The station staff is on board for adding content and allowing there to be more depth to the site (more page views!). Also thinking about implementing a social networking component, free classifieds, and perhaps a free dating script. Radio is great - it can drive traffic like crazy... problem is it's all local traffic. I can only expect regular visitors to sign up for zip/email campaigns so many times.

I appreciate any of your ideas so I can tear this thing up! :2gunsfiring_v1:

Yeah, adsense is probably your safest bet, and the firefox referral program is a good idea too. As for ideas... why not find a good cd or online music affiliate program (don't know of any off the top of my head, but there are bound to be some out there)? Post up some banners. Even recommend specific tracks in the DJ blogs. Write CD reviews and then link them to a place where users can buy the CD online. There are tons of possibilites with the music genre.

For some reason no one thinks that Google ads are annoying or spam. Not sure why. Probably your safest bet.
