What are the latest marketing methods recommended?

I'm almost ready to put up my first website. Just finishing up the last touches to my articles. I'm just wondering how I should go about marketing my site. I did some research on that a while back, but it sounds like things have changed since then - with Google and how people are marketing.

So what do they recommend these days, for 2014? Any tips on that? Like what things should I focus on, and what should I not bother with.

Well this particular website is about the best drinking water. I have several articles cover several topics and I have a few physical products that I will be promoting on this site.

But, this isn't the only website idea that I have, so I really just wanted to know in general what marketing methods are currently working.
 
Publish an infographic comparing your pristine water to your competitor's polluted water. Be sure to have graphics zooming in on the microscopic level and showing the unseen evil in competing products.
 
That's not quite what I meant. Dang it, I think I'm miss using the word marketing here. I thought the word marketing referred to getting traffic. Wish I Knew that before I posted my question.

Anyway, I meant to ask what are the latest recommended methods of getting traffic? Things like article marketing, blog commenting, etc.. What's working, and what isn't.

Daily newsletters work best for me. It's an art that I'm still learning, but if you can make people fans, they will really go to bat for you when you need them.
 
Yeah, I have come up with a plan for a newsletter.

I like that title - "ARE YOU DRINKING CANCER". That would surely get people's attention.
 
I do have an idea for an app. But, how do you go about getting an app created? Would you perhaps find someone on Elance to do it? What would you call this person, I don't know what their title would be - app developer, app creator?
 
I think that's just for creating mobile apps. I would rather have an app that works on a PC and a Mac also, and not just on phones.
