Hi, I'd like to dive into PPC marketing and wanted to know if I were to only watch ONE PPC course, which should it be. Offer selection, how to do keyword research, etc. I know there's no substitute for doing it, but I would at least like to have some kind of foundation. BTW, I tried to search. PPC and course are both too common for me to search for.

Thanks

Realistically, how much money should I plan on blowing before I should be proficient with PPC?

Thanks again

Once you learn the terminology, then it's time to go blow some cash and learn first hand

^^ Best advice you're gonna get. Cake's guide goes through the basics and then you REALLY have to put some money down and start paying for your education (by losing cash for a bit).

fuck ALL courses that you have to pay for. I also went through PPC Classroom, it was free and full of good, free info for Adwords.

On that note, be sure you are aware that Adwords has COMPLETELY changed the way they treat affiliates (they ban almost all affiliates now) so you might be very well served to start on MSN and Yahoo... probably msn as Yahoo is merging with MSN later this year anyway.

Set aside a few thousand to learn with if you can. Try to spend at least $100 a day to get enough data to work with. I think I lost about 3k my first month while learning but made it all back and more the next month.

you have to be willing to take a risk and have some faith. truth is, most people quit just before it turns around.

Thanks for the advice guys. AffAholic, did you lose 3k or did you spend 3k and earn 3k in comissions for a break even?

spent $5k, made back $2k, lost $3k.

almost quit, decided fuck it i'm going to lose everything i have cuz i liked the game... made almost every mistake you can make in that first month and it's been smooth sailing since then.

DO NOT do PPC if you cant afford to lose money, because you will. When you initially start a campaign you are buying data, and your clicks will be expensive to break into the market.

You are figuring out which keywords-->ads-->landing pages work best. It works kinda like a combo lock - gotta get it dialed in before it will be profitable.

Personally, I wouldn't pursue PPC with any less than $15k, and then make goddamn sure the network you are working with is reliable because if you dont get paid or have the worst pay-terms (cough Net-15) then you are fucked and will probably never be able to make any money.

WOW. I can deal with losing 5k, but 15k sounds kinda rough. 15k is what people say for media buys, but for PPC i usually hear people thowing around figures in the $500 to $2,000 range. Any other opinions from people who have been in the game for a bit?

AffAholic, when you first started, do you feel you made some mistakes that could have been avoided? or are your results pretty typical for PPC newbies?

there is no definitive answer anyone in the world is going to be able to give you that is going to be 100% true for you. the only way to find out is to load up a campaign and get started.

you definitely dont have to put $15k up unless you have it to lose. The thing is you really do pay for your education at first, so the more you're able to spend the more you're able to learn, plain and simple.

work with an affiliate network that has affiliate managers that can help you with basic questions. my first AM (shoutout to Chris @ motive) pretty much taught me ppc day by day when I started... we talked every day, all day for a month.

The main mistakes I made that you could avoid were I tried to make fancy hot landing pages. They didn't convert at all. Look at the competition and model your pages after that. Also, use the content network on msn or google. lots of traffic there, lots and lots of traffic there.

Definitely get familiar with a tracking system. Either Tracking202 or Bevo, they are both easily found with a Google search. Dont do ppc without one of them.

Use every type of free promotion out there that you have time to do and only if your site/blog starts to make money should you consider some form of PPC to ramp up sales and even then don't even think about advertising on the Google search platform. Use media buys or perhaps Google content but read up on the right way to use them before spending any money.

Idiot.

(or a rather misguided bot?)

yeah, it's like combination game.

you are trying to open a safe-lock that has tons of $$$s.

Demo -> Ad -> LP -> Offer + Day parting, + Bid + Etc Etc.

Well this is usually how i used to do it (and saw much success with it but got lazy since):

Test which offers actually get a few leads with a testing LP and a few thousand keywords thrown in yahoo (use advanced match type). Take one of the good offers and concentrate on that.

Make 2 good different LP's, 3 ad copies for each in every adgroup

Set up your tracking software like Prosper202, though personally i felt that Tracking 202 Pro was the BEST thing ever for starting and scaling campaigns until it started falling off (I think since the other company came in charge).

Set up a new campaign and throw in thousands of keywords (again, advanced match type) and just blast them away (your gonna lose quite some money during this), until you get keywords that do well for you.

Start a new campaign with those very keywords and variations of them (in standard match type), again use the two LP's and ad variations and just test them for a week.

Optimize your campaign, throw away the lesser performing LP, ad's etc. Throw away keywords that cost more than they make (unless you can lower bids if you have good CTR and ad quality).

Keep washing and rinsing until it becomes a well oiled machine. Export campaign to MSN and optimize there, screw Google because they will probably slap you. It's all really about finding the right niche/keyword combination, everything else is optimization.

You will have to blow through quite some cash in order to see success with PPC, best of luck. You don't need $15,000, but I would say atleast $2000 is a good amount to start with (but be a bit conservative in your spending).

Thanks for all the tips guys. What kind of returns should I be shooting for once I have a feeling for it all? 100%, 50%, 20%?

Thanks again

you should be trying not to lose too much in the beginning but understand you will lose some when you start. after that you try for as high roi as you can get.
