I'm designing a few more and wanted to get some input on what you think makes a decent landing page into a great landing page and what separates the two.

:xomunch:

The "one thing" ( as you say in marketing)

Your page must make sure every logo, image, title and paragraph concentrates on the "one thing" you are trying to accomplish.

Getting a lead, making a sale, getting them to download your free ebook...whatever

Most people forget that and go off on a tangent or try to do too many things on the page.

Keep in mind too that there are different types of landing pages, depending on what you are promoting. One landing page style might just work incredible for one type of offer but will not work for another product or market, no matter how you tweak it.

Good landing page is one that converts best , you just need to experiment different things till you think you have attained your peak

No easy answer. Every market is different. Some convert best with simple everything, others require a more sophisticated approach. All depends on the audience. You might try starting with a page you like in the market you're attacking and just start testing and tracking different components. Or better, if you know a page is converting, start there, test and track.

Don't re-invent the wheel. The page you're looking for already exists somewhere.

There's good advice above, necromancer.

ImagesAndWords summed it up. Different things persuade different markets. There are a few things that you should start testing with. For example, the trust logos and headlines mentioned by BobbyDigital, making your lander look very similar to the merchant's lander, obvious call to action, etc.

Test hero shots. Test Times New Roman on a white background. Test Verdana within a 620 table with dark blue body color. Test 2 paragraphs separated by 5 to 7 bullet points (driving home the benefits of taking action).

Start with things mentioned by others. Then, test everything.

Take notes.

You can get lucky without testing. But, testing and tweaking is the best way to increase your profits and ROI (in my experience).

The best way to optimize anything is to look at your data. In this case it seems like you don't have any info to go off. I would just look at what your competitors are doing and improve on what they have done. For instance if you can see their ads in adwords, analyze it and see why you think it works. Only thing is you can't be 100% sure that the ad is working, but if you do some investigating it is pretty obvious which ads are making $. Nobody can hide anything from you so just look around!

Hey necromancer,

There is some good advice above, but I don't care what kind of product or service you are promoting, a good landing page has to start with a strong and captivating "Headline".
That is to get them to stay there, then you have to have good and valuable content to follow the headline that tells them all the benefits for them to purchase your product or service.

I've been doing PPC/affiliate marketing for about 3 years now, I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago about maximizing LP's and getting the most out of them, everyone feel free to check it out and tell me what you think.
