Most posters are saying I will learn the most by building a website on my own and gain my knowedlge through experience.

My question (being new to this in general) is what platform should I use to start a small website for the place I work for now, just to get my feet wet online so to speak?

Thanks in advance.

If you want to learn the basis of HTML / CSS you can easily build a static site assuming it's only going to be a few pages long.

Once you've got a static site you could look at doing some work with PHP / MySQL which is a server side / database platform used on most linux boxes.

There is a lifetime of info on all available online.

What kind of web design or programming knowledge do you have? This will help is selecting a platform to approach.

Wordpress all the way mate! I have been using it for 3 years now and nothing beats the flexibility and customisation options that wordpress offers! You can not only wet your feet, you can swim the ocean in it lol.

Wordpress + good theme = #1. It might seem a bit complex at first but spending a good 60 minutes on how it works will save you months of work in doing your own programming.

One click installing WP and choosing a theme != building a website on my own and gaining knowledge.

If you want to publish some shit on the internet, great. If you want to know how the internet works - you're going to need to learn.

Thanks for the responses, from searching online and your responses WordPress seems to be the popular pick.

As far as my experience, none basically. Bachelors degree in Marketing, but this entire concept it new to me. Thanks for the info.

it is amazing!
