What platform do you guys reccomend for me to build a website?

Wordpress. It's simple to get started and its really easy to find help on any questions you have.

Wordpress for blogs with All in one SEO
Wordpress for squeeze page with Optimize Press..
Basically wordpress brah as you don't need to code anything It will make your life easier!

Various Options
I must be the only person here who thinks that Wordpress is more tricky to use than Joomla! lol
I like Joomla - it has great functionality plugins and lots of great looking themes. Admittedly they aren't free - but they aren't too expensive either.
Wordpress is probably better as a blog platform - but only because it is built in naturally to the platform.
However, other CMSs - like Joomla! have plugins that do the job.
I would stay clear of Drupal. I have knowledge of html, css. mysql - and also php, but Drupal was incredibly tough to get my head around. If you want to keep it simple - avoid it.....No doubt that Drupal does have its good points though - but it is much more tekkie!
As was mentioned somewhere above - why not try building your own website? It will be good experience for you. Also, it is much easier to extend and add to code that YOU have created than it is to try to understand and then extend somebody elses (including Wordpress and Joomla!).
Build your site with html, create a database with phpMyaAmin, link the html to the database using php, and plugin a bit of javascript/ajax if you need to...jobs a gud un!

You don't even need to master Wordpress bro! Use it for 5 minutes and you're already the master.. No need for coding shit and stuff, cause that's how wordpress is made "for non-coders" and for use of marketers.

You should stick to wordpress if you first getting started.
Its a great platform to start out on, very easy to use and understand.
I Personally love woothemes for my wordpress sites, they make it extra easy to customize and design your site with their custom UI plugins
