What's better? Lots of small, white-label sites, or one large site?

Take any niche out there. Doesn't matter. You look around, see a couple competitors larger than you, and see a bunch smaller than you that you could potentially bring under one umbrella. Then with the strength of everyone being under one umbrella, you could overtake the bigger guys in the market.

What's the best plan of action? Allow the smaller guys to continue running under their name transparently, so you become somewhat like an octopus with tentacles reaching everywhere. Or, force them to go under your name, and become the elephant in the room that everyone immediately sees?

Discuss.

One big one. Then use the money to sustain the one big one + launch a lot of smaller ones.

Why not do both?

Ok, let me rephrase then. If a bunch of smaller competitors in the market are going to combine their resources, giving them the strength to overtake the larger players, which path it best? Allow all the smaller guys to continue running under their own name, or bring them under your own name?

Both methods have advantages and disadvantages to them.

Why are the small ones small? What, aside from volume, are the large ones doing that the small ones aren't? It isn't going to be something major, and it isn't just volume (that came latter for them), but the combination of standards, procedures, quality control, proper planing, etc. The small things all put together.

It has been my experience that most small business owners are going to predictably fail due to their bad mindset. I can't see how multiplying that bad mindset would help anything. Most small businesses don't lack volume, they lack structure. If they got the volume they desire, for the most part they would do badly.

If its eCommerce related and I smell blood in the water (weak competition) I build multiple sites. I build one every weekend to enjoy that fresh vagina newbie bump that Google gives.

Guaranteed two to three months later I own 5-6 of the first page spots. That lovely illusion of choice.

That being said if its a tough as fuck non ecomm niche I have one main site that banks and a couple others, these don't sell anything but they drive traffic to the main site.

When you're playing Google's game, having only one site is insane. It's just too easy to build sites to only have one, and I don't mean shitty MFA sites. Building authority sites in 2013 is probably no harder than building MFA sites was a few years ago. You just need the right tools and the right workers to get the job done.
