A guy I know has a little osCommerce store set up right now, but he wants to me to start a new site for him and use my skills to make him some money.

So right now his old store looks like crap, I logged in to the osCommerce admin and it doesn't seem too great, can't change the template unless you swap the files.

I was looking at Zen Cart and there are some nice templates for that, and I guess you can switch templates just like in Wordpress (still need to upload it and test it out). But is it very good for SEO?

Is there something better out there (preferably open source) that I should get, or should I go with Zen Cart?

oscommerce is pretty solid if you know what you're doing.. you can buy templates or get them for free, plus there are a TON of mods out there already done for you. I'm pretty sure zencart is an oscommerce base too.. just more newb friendly. If you want something opensource, oscommerce is the way to go for ecommerce. You can also get SEO mods for it, so it'll be fine for SEO.

Magento - but the pool is deep and cold . .

HI,

We use CRE Loaded and it works great. All our ecommerce sites are using it and we have the ability to have excellent site and manage our inventory, see orders, email customers and a lot more. Our Web Designer does all of it for us and he charges $300 + for a site. Ask me for his info or our URL's if you want.

I use ZenCart for all of mine; I like the fact that it's all open-source PHP and I can modify the code to fit what I'm doing. (I'm usually doing weird SEO or affiliate stuff, not just running a straight-up store.)

If you're only selling a few items, one of the cart WordPress plugins might be easier, though.
