Joomla is awesome for making community sites, lots of extensions made for it and a huge user base to help you out.
I haven't tried Drupal, I heard it gives you much more flexibility in what you can do with your site, but you might need a little more knowledge of PHP to handle it all.

No offense, but if you cant understand Joomla then maybe CMS's just aren't for you. Joomla is one of the simplest CMS I have worked with... the backend is very well designed and easy to use. Just give it more than 10 minutes to figure out and you should be good to go.
Drupal on the other hand is a completely different story.... haha
