"Insurance? Ok, i had an accident... No, not a water buffalo again. How is the rate for planes?"

BBC News - Despite the headlines air travel is safer than ever

Was just reading the article above...

According to safety analysts Ascend, 2014 was narrowly the safest year ever, with one fatal accident per 2.38 million flights, compared to every 1.91 million flights the year before.

...

Nearly 1,000 people died in 2014, which is 700 more than the year before.

Horrible numbers, but compare that to the worst year, 1972, when 2,370 passengers were killed - and far fewer people were flying then, maybe a quarter of the number travelling today.

But 2014 is the worst year in term of number of death in a decade 1000 people.
Airtravel safety may be shaken by lowcost airlines which may make even premium Airline to cut cost to stay float esp pilot training.

^^ Seen that one a few times. They reckon the load shifted on takeoff, all to the tail end of the plane, throwing the balance completely off and it stalled. The pilot actually got it level, but just didn't have the altitude to recover :(

I used to have this 1987 Ford Thunderbird that had a gearshift that would randomly fall back into neutral, and I'd shit a brick every single time for like four seconds because I couldn't figure out why the car wasn't going. I can't even imagine that happening in a plane.
