Here on the eastcoast I can't drive 2 blocks (literally) without seeing some bus ad, flyer, sign or billboard, or hearing these on the radio. Ads of services that will pay you cash for your used car.

"Trade in your used car for cash NOW! FREE TOWING!"

What exactly happens to the cars that makes this so lucrative?

The parts salvaged from some models is very valuable. There is a lot of cash in scrap metals. Your town makes a profit from recycling now, where recycling used to be conducted at a loss.

Used catalytic converters have platinum inside that can be salvaged. A good one can go for around $150+ Of course its not the only thing that can be salvaged. Those guys make a fucking killing

With so many people hurting from the financial slowdown, and the still high metals prices I'm sure this a booming business. There must be many desperate people who are looking for any way they can to raise some cash.

Let's put it this way... My ex's brother did this full time. One day I went with him and I never understood why he was so excited to find an old AC unit. "Copperrrr woohoo" 2 hours later he got like $300 for the copper in there alone..

It's amazing what people will do... like 4 AM scrounging through dumpsters in a big city.

i should buy a trailer and drive to all the farms around here. it seems like every farm has a row of at least 5-10 cars that have been sitting in a field dormant for decades

I'm on the East Coast, too

Must be your area because I haven't seen any advertising like this. Some of the ads may be offering a trade in value, not outright cash by the sounds of it though. Those guys not only suck you into getting another car through them, they also strip and sell the parts off the car you have hauled in (that you thought was worthless). Now that's good marketing...lol.
