What and why?

I need to micromanage a lot of things with many sub items. Some items get done fast. Others are in progress for a long time. It can become a mess real fast. Been trying so many things, now I am down to 3 types of preparing tables that I created for myself. Since paper doesn't support drag&drop i fear this is not scalable.

Please share what you have :)

Basecamp.

I've tried a bunch of methods. Local files, custom scripts hosted locally, open source systems on my servers and hosted services.

It's simple, flexable and let me manage tons of projects. Take the free trial Basecamp offers and see if it's for you.

ActiveCollab

Self hosted with many more features than basecamp
Retain ownership of your files
Custom modules

I'm using Project Pier for my link building service project management system, it does a good amount of stuff pretty well. I also use basecamp a lot, it's a great tool too.

PP is free, good thing to try out and see if you like it, you have nothing to lose.

Basecamp is great till your boss forgets to pay the bill or there's a network/internet issue. We were using it for a video marketing project and the thinking was that since it's an on-line project the tracking could be on-line without any compromises. Dumb assumption considering the majority of the tracking was local.

Honestly, a gifted access programmer could replace Basecamp for project management and tracking for free.

ActiveCollab was great but ProjectPier is where it's at for anyone wanting to continue on for free (AC went closed source/commercial).

Hope that helps!

If you're looking for something simple to use check out TaskFreak. It's not bogged down with a ton of features and is pretty straightforward.

Zoho Tasks for the team. It's very similar to basecamp. I use it instead of basecamp because I also use the Zoho recruit & Zoho People for hiring and some of their other apps. Check them all out at zoho.com.

For myself I use Mind Meister. I have it set to open every time I open a new tab in Google Chrome which I use as my main browser.

If your project is development related with source and asset files, you'd use a versioning system like SVN or Github.

No, I need to micro-manage lot of discret projects (clients), each with sub-tasks that are assigned to different people.
I need to assign the tasks to these people and follow up with them.
There are client works and development work and i also need to see what's going on at a glance (that's why I like to have everything on one page, even if the font gets smaller and smaller) so i can prioritize and see what's behind and adjust.

At any one time I might have 15-20 on going projects. There are 6 main people I manage who each do different tasks. The sub-tasks are often dependent on each other.

New projects keep getting added on so I need to clear the old ones ASAP and while I do this i get bombarded by phone calls during the day.

So te solutions need to be super-intuitive, easy to use, and practical.

Then I strongly advice to use FusionDeskPro.
You can organize projects with a tabbed user interface, every main project a tab, and inside the project you can create folders and subfolders and ad tasks to these. Every task can be set up with Priority, Status, Start/End time, estimate costs (based on elapsed time and hourly costs), people to be assigned to.....

You can even create an invoice for your customers.
