I'm about to start a personal interest project which I plan to eventually monetize somehow (either thru adsense/AM or selling it).

Should I monetize the site by placing adsense/AM on it from the start? Or should I let it build alot of traffic, look pretty without ads, then put ads up or sell it?

Insights?

well my thought is i could get traffic way up without ads and sell the site solely on the traffic and potential

or get the traffic up without ads because i know if i found a useful site without ads, id be more likely to tell a friend and/or bookmark it. if its laden with annoying ads so the owner makes money, kinda devalues the site a bit.

just considering doing things a little differently...

If your goal is building traffic, then do it without ads. If you want to get people used to ads on your site, then build it with ads. You'd probably grow traffic faster without ads, but i have no data to prove that.

I agree with Barman. Especially if you're just starting a site, whatever you make from AdSense/AM will be so little it won't matter much anyway. Focus on quality, built up links + PR, then use the link juice from that site to fuel your AM sites to the top of the serps...

Building up a site without ads might work better, but I wouldn't advice selling your site based on traffic and potential, you'll get much less than you would after you build up traffic and properly monetized it.

Most people look at what a site earns when they buy it, and unfortunately they don't really care about potential earnings. But hey, it's all up to you! Good Luck!

Do I get to say it first..... Stop asking gay questions and contribute 776 fucking questions.... well I take that back you made one good contribution post. 775 fucking questions. I want to see posts that say "Ok so I tried this and this happened, then I tried this, oh and I tested this too. number 1 seemed to give me the best result. STOP leeching, do some work and give back.

some people say you should wait nearly a year before putting ads on your website/blog, so you can build up loyal readers... or something like that

also, when you do decide to put ads in, you could disguise it as a "redesign" and upload a totally new design that has ad spots in it. softens the blow

The last 3 responses were EXACTLY what I was looking for!!

Thanks chatmasta, sebastya, and Eli!

Awesome advice

Thanks aim, sebastaya, and chatmasta,

I'm a complete noob at all the topics on this forum, and I hope the quick replies you made to this post will be realized by my fellow noobs for the valuable information they contain. No matter how long I'm here in a day, I always come away with great knowledge.

Peace

I don't think it's always a black & white issue where you always wait X months or achieve Y traffic. I thinks it's best to focus on your target audience and what they want and expect.

If you're growing a site on opinion, discussion, learning about a subject - like how to ski - then don't monetize it right away. The people going to your site are browsing first and clicking the back button to check the next relevant article from their Google search.

If your site is about the best places to ski, lift pass discounts, and nearby hotels, then the folks attracted to that site are interested in making a decision. Ads would not offend them at all. Besides they don't know how long you've been around or how much traffic you're getting. They want a deal on that 3-day weekend in Whistler.
