When is WordPress mu NOT a good idea?

I got some ambitious plans for for blogging.

I thought about installing WP MU, but I was wondering if that's a good idea. Is it future proof?

Is WPMU recommended for mass blogging only? like auto blogs and low value / high quantity blogs? Or should it be also considered for serious blog development with long term plans?

I'm thinking perhaps if I want to segregate a blog from the others, or put it on its own VPS, WP might be an issues?

Also perhaps the fact that the WP MU development seems to lag a little behind?

What are you thoughts? What are DOs and DONT WP MU?

Self made wildcard subdomains on the fly.
Awesome theme avaialbilty but not all WP
Lots of plugins work.
SEO is good if your theme, content, and linking are good.

Donts
One database that can get hosed
Some plugins dont work
development is slow. Still old look in admin
Need more server access than Wordpress
Cant set different urls or assign urls to users
