or are they already? I don't think they are.. but you would think someone at Facebook has to be thinking about how to position themselves to compete with Google Search.. with all those eyeballs at Facebook, it would only make sense to create a search engine based on profile interest somehow tied into websites, offering an even more targeted search but only within FB.

If Facebook had any intentions of entering the search market they never would of brought on Microsoft (A.K.A. Bing) as their partner. So your question is better tailored to is Bing ever going to be able to compete with Google search wise? (The answer is no and the reason is one word 'Microsoft').
I don't think facebook will be a rival of google as not in the line of facebook to be one of the search engines.
I think if you could start to do searches inside facebook and see results within the facebook website, then it might be tempting.
A bit like how you can do everything with google these days, with youtube, GDocs, calendar, etc.
If facebook had all these types of applications inside facebook, then it might be competition.
