When setting out to implement a new PPC campaign which of these comes first in your quest?

1) You sift through massive keyword lists of tens of thousands of keywords eliminating obvious ultra-competitve keywords until you have sifted down to a few very good, low competition candidates

Then you build campaigns around those keywords with good products/offers ...

- or -

2) You find a good product/offer and then do your keyword discovery by building lists of keywords around those products

???

#2 but I guess you can never really know what the hell is ever going on. For me at least.

Personally ... finding good offers and designing good LP's has always been the easy part. The part I sometimes struggle with is the keyword research; finding converting keywords with a manageable amount of competition. I would say option #1 has come first for me recently. I'll find some decent low competition high traffic kw's and match them up with an offer that relates to the subject.

There's so many affiliates on the networks (networks have been multiplying too) that the terms end up getting flooded within weeks of an offer/new niche being released. As many others have said before, one problem is the fact that there are hundreds of new affiliates trying to get started .. investing $1000's even if they're not profitable.

That being said, there's still plenty of dough in this game ... it has just become more of a challenge. Who doesn't like a challenge?
