Neat and cool looking, but probably not very practical. Especially since the effect requires it to be the dominant thing on the screen.

Also if the rendering engine it uses is not the same as FireFox, Safari or IE, then it'll have little support from me as a developer.

It uses IE engine, but I agree with you. It's just a toy to play with.

But as long as it uses a commonly used engine (IE, FF/Webkit) then it would be in my opinion viable to the the niche of users who would like to use it without risking too many sites not looking right.

(Though using IE's engine means there's no chance that browser is going to be cross platform compatible, so kind of a loss point there for me, and is also possible compatibility will be questioned when users start upgrading to IE8 forcing a change in the 3D browser's capability).

Gotta say, I used Iron yesterday, after Vinny posted about it.
I'm actually impressed.

It's got all the benefits of Chrome (slick interface, nice load times on script heavy sites, etc), with none of the creepy "Google's out to get your info" feel... until you log into Gmail...

Though I'm always skeptical when one present their product like...

SRWare Iron: The Browser of the future

... right... and I wasn't all that impressed with chrome, its basically another webkit browser with more of a candy-like UI.
