I've been doing this full time for over 2 years now. I run two full fledged incs, have an office, the whole 9 yards.

Before that I used to work for a business intelligence company and I would work on this stuff on randomly during the day then work at night after work.

In regards to the volatility, setup a backup plan, invest, invest invest. If shit hits the fan you should have numerous sources of income setup via your investments. Also, don't put all your eggs in one basket on the net. Try to find numerous ways of generating revenue, the scale that shit up.

I was basically in the same boat. I was working a dead end 9-5, but it allowed me to actually start my business since I was sitting at a computer all day.

I agree with your comments about investing. I'm not great with the stock market, so I stick as much as I possibly can into my countrywide savings account that pays 5.5% interest. It's a very nice feeling to know that I have it when business dies down.

I do it full time but I have a blogging gig that I do strictly for health insurance. I could technically afford private insurance but theres plenty of complications and bullshit in my immediate family, so staying with already existing health insurance made sense to me.

What is the big deal about health insurance?

I am over 35 ... I pay only $130 a month for a great plan ... it has a $4,000 deductible, but so what? I only go to the doctor 4 times a year ... if I get injured, I have to pay up to $4,000 .... That's fine.

This is for only $135 a month, including dental. There are lots of deals out there.

Don't let "benefits" influence your decision to work for yourself, unless your company has huge 401k matching or something -- or you have an entire family you need to ensure or something.

LOL - it was my experience that paying for health insurance is cheaper. I hope your experience is different!

LOL or how about....from all the headaches and pains in the neck you get from your partner it's a wash! HA!

been on my own for almost 6 years, but I do more of the CPA deals, not the AM stuff that many do on this board. I now am supplementing my gig with some RE development on the side. I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks the monotony of this industry can make it more than boring at times.

Monotony? Are you in the same industry I am? I've never found a faster moving more upward mobile with potential to use creativity then anything else. There's always something new to learn, read, chat about, test....

As far as the stability statement I invite you to master a system/strategy then build it out to 2-3 main niches. Once you've done that move onto your next system/strategy so if one niche or system dies for some reason you have backup. Also save up at least 6 months of money to run on and all your worries will go away.

For example when I talk about a system/strategy that could be posting ads on craigslist, promoting some niche on adwords, promoting some niche on ysm, blackhat, whitehat blog. Now don't tackle these all at once but once you have 1 up a generating a substantial amount of money then move on to the next. A substantial amount of money is different for everyone but most things hit some limits where there's a diminishing point of returns. This is when you're going to want to move on to your next system. So say you're running adwords and ysm, adwords makes a change and you still got ysm income coming in. You get the point.

Design your business model to build in flexibilty and don't put all your eggs in one basket, then you'll have security.

I'm with you, smaxor. I have been doing this full time since last February, so it has been almost a year.

This is the only job I have had that wasn't boring after this much time.

Sucks for all you Americans who have to pay for your healthcare.

A fairly decent individual health insurance plan is not that expensive if you are in reasonably good health, especially for somebody in their 20's or 30's. Mine is only about twice as much as my car insurance (LOL). It does have a fairly high deductible, but I am older than most of the people on this board. Of course, it is also a tax deduction too.

But I am lucky....People with health issues who cannot get accepted on a private individual plans usually have some sort of state high risk plan, but these can get expensive. It is those people who are very vulnerable under the current system. IMHO this is the part of the health insurance system we need to reform first.

These health issues don't even have to be all that serious to get people declined.... recent high blood pressure readings, diabetes (even if well controlled), taking anti-depressants for more than a few months.....

OK - sorry to be off topic, but this is a topic I am familiar with, and it is sort of a personal soapbox of mine....

Up until last month I worked strictly marketing online. I started a small business as a back up. But I've done well online. My family does not do without.

Think out of the box, not only only marketing but in every day business. This is the one thing that I have learned from the internet. "Think out of the box!!"

Unless you are Einstein, you don't need to think out of the box. What is out of the box when you don't even know what is in the box :Yahoo_29:. I like the idea copy, steal, and then mash better.

again, I've been in this 6 YEARS, not months! It gets monotonous, but as I said, I don't do the AM stuff, I'm more on the product end. I'm the the guy for AM in the way most of your are into it. But I profit off how powerful it is.

Probably be in this game longer than most. And never mentioned anything about security, I think I know what I'm doing being in it for 6 years as my only job :)
