I'm going to Peru with my girlfriend at the end of November for about 3 weeks. Right now, all we have are plane tickets to Lima and back.

Watching a lot of videos now and it seems like we will spend a majority of our time avoiding getting ripped off or avoiding people begging for money. But maybe these videos overplay that aspect.

If I want to get out of the cities and be in the mountains, where do I go?

Anyone who's been there who can give some advice, I would appreciate it.

I know two things about Peru.

1. Machu Picchu is some old garden thing on a hill side in the middle of God's nowhere.
2. Don't try to smuggle blow out or you'll end up in Lurigancho.

I also know two things about Peru:

1. The guy who works on my Audi has a vacation condo there he rents out with a view of the beach and a photo of that view is his wallpaper on his phone.
2. Great cocaine comes from there.

Responding just because of that pic...god damn!

I lived in Cuzco for a month or so, I'd suggest going there for a little bit. If you're white in Peru, you're gonna get beggars no matter what, but Cuzco has a pretty decent ratio of foreigners to natives and the locals are pretty friendly (just watch your wallet). Machu Picchu is pretty cool and worthwhile to see if you're already down there, there are beggars at the bottom of the valley but they don't venture up to the actual ruins so it's not very annoying. That's all I've got, went there when I was 12 so unfortunately don't have much in the way of bars/clubs.

1 - Do the 4 day Inca Trek to get to Macchu Picchu... amazing scenery. So rewarding.
2 - Lima - if your gonna try the Cerviche (raw fish) do it at nice places. Goes great with Pisco Sour (local drink)
3 - Amazon - good to see if you've never been....you're gonna sweat!
4 - Cusco - Pretty cool town - go there first to get use to the altitude, if going to macchu picchu.

Never got asked for money, never got robbed etc etc... just dont do stupid things and use common sense and you'll be fine.
