Why Do People Care If Consumers "Know" They're Being Advertised To?

I was watching the advertising documentary "The Best Movie Ever Sold" last night which was made by the same guy who made SuperSize Me.

There was a guy on there who appeared to have only one sole purpose in life: to make sure people know their being advertised to.

He says there should be a disclaimer that runs across the bottom of the screen during a television show product placement scene that tells the audience essentially "you are being advertised to."

You also see this with magazine ads, etc that look like articles with "advertisement" placed on the top of it. Or blogs that have to "disclose" they are making a profit by suggesting a product (aka. "this is an advertisement").

I'm just trying to figure out why people give a shit about this? So people can say "oh, it's just an advertisement, I won't buy this product now, but I was about to."? If they want to buy the damn product because they saw it on a television show, let them buy it, what's the difference between that and a regular commercial?

ALL advertising is persuasion, who is anyone to say how persuasive it should be?

Because people want to be babysat, people want to babysit them. Pretty much - most people are little bitches.
