why does my site still look "empty"?

What are better uses of the real estate that I have available? I like the "look" but how do I make the site look even more professional without whoring it out with banners?

That's a great start. I would consider a about/what is section on your main page. Just a small paragraph to explain what it is you do, will also help to fill in some white space.. I mean pink space!

the layout of these two pics makes it seem bare:

It leaves too much "pink space" on the left.. try rearranging them

I'd say it looks empty because of all the unused space

If you made some of the elements the same size, a lot of the wasted space would be gone. Like if you made the random kats pictures the same size, there wouldn't be so much random space between them.

Try a little wider width on your content. Make the header a shorter (height). Also, figure out a better layout for the top middle section. The whole "featured" kat thing... you're wasting a lot of space there.
