So I've got a raccoon problem and they're tearing the hell out of my lawn at night looking for grubs, worms etc. Unfortunately I can't shoot them, so I got a humane cage trap so I can relocate them. Last night I ended up catching two possums. Let the first one go and then took the other one to a field this morning to get rid of his ass.

As I'm opening the cage up to let him out, I look down and I'm standing in a fucking pile of bees that have just realized I'm walking all over them. So I run like a bitch back to my truck. But....I left the cage sitting next to the bee hive. I had to run back into the swarm to grab my trap (thing cost me $60 bucks) and get the hell outta there. I think bee's were chasing my truck as I tore outta there. Now I've just got to catch those raccoon bastards.

Watch out for mother nature. She's just trying to take a brotha down.

That's a pretty wild story.

Goodluck on your initial goal to capture the Raccoons. Where abouts are you located where possums are so common?

I've had some Raccoons and Heron eating the fish out of the pond in our front yard.
Came out the front door one night to take out the trash and saw a good sized raccoon splashing around in the pond. He got out and slowly walked away as if he didn't give a rats ass if I was there or not. Once all the fish were all gone, I didn't replace them for 2-3 months so they would not have a reason to come back. Just put some new fish in a few weeks ago and so far they have been fine.

Where did you get the trap?

I got a decoy heron and put it near the pond, they say they are territorial. I hadn't seen them, but neighbor stopped by one day and said he saw a huge heron trying to grab fish from our pond one day.

We just shoot them here, but I can understand why not everyone would want to or be able to do that. If you trap them, then make sure that you don't get caught if it's illegal/out of season where you are.

Also, sardines are excellent bait for racoons. <-- A bit of redneck advice for you. Good luck.

Got the trap on Amazon. It's the first one here. Live Animal Traps | Shop Havahart Cage Traps. Bought a cheap one from Harbor Freight a few months back and the racoons just broke the door off it and laughed at me. The Havahart one is good quality.

I've been using cans of tunafish. Worked like a charm for the possums, which we seem to have an abundance of here on So. Cal. Raccoons are considered furbearers in California, so you can't kill them out of season unless they're causing damage according to the fish & game website. It says you can't relocate them either, but I don't give a shit. I'm taking them half a mile down the road to an area that's a nature protected environment. They're better off there than in a residential area.

At only a half a mile, they will find their way back, especially if there is food involved. You need to drop them much further away. I'd recommend a good 20 miles to be safe.

If you want to kill them, but can't shoot them because of being in town, you can drown them. Fill up a large garbage can with water and drop your trap in it. Quick, quiet and not messy.

If you get a skunk in your trap, toss a sheet over the trap and drown before you drown it. That way hopefully you won't get sprayed.

It's probably closer to 3/4 of a mile away, but there's an 6 lane freeway between my house and the protected area where I'm dropping them. If they try to cross that, they're gonna be meat waffles.

Man I hate coons. I lived on the ground floor of an apartment building that had a massive raccoon problem. Eventually I got fed up and bought some subsonic rounds for my .22. That Saturday, I went hunting and the coons never bothered me again :)
