Wordpress exists to simplify the somewhat tedious and mundane tasks that are involved in SERP rankings. We mainly use it because of plug-ins that automate a lot of the work: SEO Plug-ins mainly, but also others.
Setting up one of these, if you've ever used FTP before, is really fricking easy. Wordpress brags about their 5 minute install; if you know what you're doing it takes less than a minute.
Hosting at Bluehost is like $5 a month (aka $60 a year) and a domain from NameCheap.com (where you honestly should buy it b/c their customer support will help you through most of your newb problems you'll be too lazy to look up in the FAQ or help center) that will cost about $10/yr.
In the end, you're spending $70 a year. If you're not willing to spend that to get in a business, don't get in business at all.
Next, you want to find an uncompetitive niche, but that still has a fair amount of traffic so you're not wasting your time. You first site is mainly about learning: learning how to set up blogs quickly, how bookmarking works and the most efficient ways of doing so, optimization of ads and offers, and so fourth. Try to find something with less than 50,000 searches when you search for the "keyword" in google with quotes. Optimally, there will be no major sites you have to compete with (Wikipedia, and other powerhouses with huge PageRanks you're not going to really surpass).
In terms of the niche, in the Google Search Tool, it should be (although not necessarily) a 3-4 word keyword, called long-tail, and it should be in a niche either have found an offer for, or an offer which would appeal to the demographic of your site. That's important. It's not just, oh I have a gardening site I need a gardening offer. It's, okay I have mainly females between the age of 35-48(I'm making this up, but you can use Quantcast to figure out this information for sites in the same niche as you with some data.) and so this offer will appeal to that demographic.
Then you use Google Website Optimizer to try small things with you website and see differences in conversions (changing colors of your site, moving you ads around, etc.)
Lastly, you need bookmarks obviously. There's a lot of info on this, and I'm certainly no expert. Do you're own research on this. Essentially, you want to build links on sites that are similar to yours or on Web 2.0 sites you can make your own page on (which you'd talk briefly about your niche to make it relevant.) Then you ping links so the search engines see them. Basically, you're goal is to get on the front page of Google. But if you're term is only getting 4k searches a month, or about 100 a day (3k being the least you should ever build a site around, or it's not worth your time) than you really want to be in position 2-3 in Google, and in the best case scenario, in position 1. In one of these top positions, of the about 100 searches a day, you'll get 40-70. Not amazing, but with the little competition you faced getting there, not terrible either.
This site may take 1-3 months of diligent link-building to get there, but after you have, you'll start showing up for some other keywords and eventually you'll get to like 100+ unique visits a day. If your offers are targeted, and prominently displayed (or you have a list where you can send them offers later, yes, Aweber costs money and that's also an investment, in your 2nd or 3rd website, with some experience, you should try this out) than you should in all honesty be getting 2-3, maybe 5 or more leads a day. Then, great, you're banking like $15-make $30, a day, maybe less, but you have experience and you're making some money, and it's time to go into other niches.
Last note. While you're a week into building your first site (and you basically understand what you're doing) take on like 2-3 more sites in different niches. Some of your sites are going to be flops and barely make anything, some are going to be serious winners and make you a lot, and some are going to be right in the middle and make just enough. If your 3 months in, and you only have one site to show for it, that's a problem.
The rest, use your fricking brain for. It's not that hard. And most of all, try shit yourself. None of us figured anything out without trying shit. We tried, we failed, and then we succeeded, and then we took our successes and our failures, learned from them, and multiplied what worked.
