I want people to be able to be view my sites homepage and sign up to be a contributor without me assigning them the roles manually. So, I need a wordpress plugin(s) that will allow user to register, login and post content under a contributor role.

Why have them register and login? Just buy and use Gravity Forms (a WordPress plugin), create a form that allows them to create content. All content will come in as Draft though, you'll have to set them live.
I was going to use a form like gravity forms but I wanted the users to be able to have the formatting options of a word press post. My goal is to create a user generated site.
