XenForo or phpBB?

I am getting ready to launch a forum for an already busy site and I want to do it right from the beginning in case it takes off. I was about to purchase a VBulletin 4.0 license, but keep reading they've been going downhill since they've been purchased. With that, I'm trying to decide between phpBB and XenForo.

My first choice would be to go with XenForo, but I'm not so sure because they are in Beta, being sued by IB, and if they are charging while they're in Beta, who knows what the price will go up to when they get settled in. Money isn't that big of a concern, but I don't want to get locked into overpaying for something.

The good would be that they have great reviews so far and being an early adopter may have some benefits.

Otherwise, I could just go with phpBB, but I'm not sure if its worthy of a big project since 99% of what I read on forums said to go with VBulletin up until recently.

Any opinions would be great!

Thanks!

I went through the same process about a month ago but in the end opted to go with XenForo. Here you've got a team with experience who are building forum software based on years of trial and error. They know what works and what doesn't work.

Even though it's only at RC2, it looks complete from the front and backends so I can only imagine it's going to get better.

Plus if you have any questions, you can jump on their forum and people are developing free skins and plugins for the software. The community is really good.

I would suspect the price will go up as development and the court case is dismissed. I don't know if that will happen but given how these things can drag out and how different XenForo actually is to VBulletin, I have a hunch that they won't get far with it.

XenForo all the way IMO.

I think I just decided the same thing since I wrote the post. I am going to give it a shot based on all the support I see for XenForo in my research - especially the developers ditching Vbulletin altogether and taking their plugins with them. I figure if, somehow, they get shut down by VB, there will be plenty of support in converting an active forum back to VB.

It's worth the risk and it looks like it's going to be the next big contender in forum software.

Thanks!

For what it's worth I really enjoy using Vanilla forum. If you haven't seen it, it is worth checking out.

How in the hell did this thread make it this far without a mention of IPB? It's the best forum software available and combines all the good points of VB and Xenforo with out the pending lawsuits and shitty downhill spiral going on between the other two.
