Thanks to all of those that helped me with the best man speech. I totally fucking nailed it!

Got a ton of laughs (some in places I didn't expect) and made the bride AND the groom cry.

A bunch of people complimented me on the speech --- all of this is really amazing when you consider I would rather drive a fork through my hand than make a public speech.

Excellent resources and tips -- gonna + rep everyone that helped in my first thread.

Thank you thank you!

Grats - I've got a ton of fraternity brothers graduating soon which inevitably means they'll be getting married soon too so I'm most likely gonna be in the same boat you are haha

Ok...

I wasn't the first person to give a toast. First the Father of the Bride, and then the Maid of Honor went. People talked through their toasts and I couldn't hear them. So... when I went up, I was determined to be loud and clear. When the Maid of Honor thrust the microphone at me, I felt like I had been punched in the gut -- butterflies.

I told myself over and over -- talk slow --- talk loud -- talk clear.

I said "Hi" into the mic and the crowd burst into laughter -- I guess cause it was quite loud.

"My name is Bryan." they laughed again....at this point I was wondering if my zipper was down or something...but at least they were all paying attention.

"It is my honor to toast the Bride and Groom. But something most of you probably don't know, xxxxxxxx was the best man at my wedding and he gave a toast at the reception. So this my chance...for Payback." the crowd ohhh'd and awwww'd. <--I shamelessly ripped and altered this content from the site recommended to me in the first thread.

"But first.... I would like to thank xxxbridexxx's parents for making this wonderful event possible. Mr. and Mrs. xxxxxxxx, Thank you." the crowd gave applause. "I would also like to thank all of you for being here. It says a lot about xxxxbridexxxx and xxxxgroomxxxx to have so many warm, caring, friends and family here to support them."

"I first met xxxxgroomxxxx 20 years ago." the crowd laughed again - because I was starting so far back? Some of the laughing baffled me.

"We were both 17 and working at Chucky's." Laughed again, funny name maybe?

"Which is a small convenience store in CT. We worked the night shift, so it was just the 2 of us. xxxxgroomxxxx had been there a couple months before me, so he decided to show me the ropes our first night together. After the grueling task of teaching me the best places to hide and where to sneak a nap (it was in the cooler) - we spent the remaining 7 hours playing video games and laughing all night long."

"And that’s when I learned the value of hard work and ambition..." -laughing-

"Thanks xxxxgroomxxxx! I also learned xxxxgroomxxxx was a master at video games."

"Over the years xxxxgroomxxxx has taught me a lot about life and friendship and I’ve come to think of xxxxgroomxxxx as more than just a friend – xxxxgroomxxxx is family – my brother – and I can’t think of a better man to have around in both the good times and the bad." the groom cried at some point, I think this was it.

"I first met xxxbridexxx just a year and half ago. xxxgroomxxx had been talking about her non-stop and was very excited to introduce xxxbridexxx to me and my wife Susan. I was just getting over pneumonia or something and Susan was sleep deprived from playing nurse. Groggy on medicine I didn’t really talk much, or open my eyes all the way… Later I found out that xxxbridexxx was worried that we didn’t liked her." the crowd awwww'd.

"But nothing could be further from the truth. Even packed full of meds I could tell right away that xxxbridexxx was a beautiful, smart, thoughtful woman and that xxxgroomxxx was lucky to have found her." Bride cried... not sure what crowd did -- my anxiety was high at this point, I was nervous as hell. Later many people told me they couldn't tell, but I felt like I was just a second away from pissing my pants.

-talk slow -talk loud - talk clear............. I took a breath.

"The first impression was the right one. xxxbridexxx has proven to be a positive influence on xxxgroomxxx . She has introduced xxxgroomxxx to coaching children and volunteering for the xxxxcharityxxx."

"While xxxgroomxxx … has gotten xxxbridexxx hooked on the UFC" some laughs

"– the sport where two guys beat each other to unconsciousness or tapout." few more laughs -- the people that didn't know what UFC was?

"...I guess xxxbridexxx is lucky too, ‘cuz the UFC ROCKS." crowd laughed.

I was having a hard time thinking what came next so the laughing gave me a sec to think. (I didn't wanna have notes in my hand, so I memorized it -- real close to being a mistake!)

"I’ve given quite a few toasts over the years.. But this is the first time that I’ve had the honor of toasting a couple that so obviously love each other."

"Just the other night my wife and I were talking about what a great couple xxxgroomxxx and xxxbridexxx are and how xxxbridexxx lights up when she talks about xxxgroomxxx ."

"And how xxxgroomxxx …lights up …. when he talks about ... xxxgroomxxx." crowd laughed ... not sure if groom liked this one =)

"So it’s plain to see why they are made for each other. They both have so much in common, and while it might be true that: Opposites Attract. We all know that it is the couple with the most in common whose love will last a life-time." --- this part got fucked up. Not sure exactly what I said, but my wife said it was close enough and had the same message.

"And so, let’s all raise our glasses.

Here’s to two wonderful people and a lifetime of happiness together. Congratulations!" I polished off my drink.

at this point I just wanted to fall backwards and lay there a while. But I hugged everyone- bride said she cried, groom said "me too" and went to ask my wife how it went. I think we had applause and stuff, but it was a blur. It didn't sink in that I had really nailed it until about 10 different people complimented me shortly after and a bridesmaid told my wife she'd like me to come do a toast at her upcoming wedding. ...Not a fucking chance!

My best friend was the best man at a friend's wedding, where they all started drinking at around 10am for the services at 7pm. Needless to say, the speech didn't go as planned, but my buddy winged it with what I thought was one of the best opening lines ever, especially coming from someone who had trouble standing...

"Many thanks to Samuel Addams for helping me write this speech..."

And he pretty much went on to repeat just about everything a few times over a 20 minute period.

I was tearing from laughing so hard. Not because what he said was so funny, but that fact that none of the groom's family and older folks there knew he was drunk, and thought that this was how he acted all the time. So the looks on their faces were just fuckin priceless!

I love drunken stuper weddings!

Karnul.. good job dude. I like your speech! You shouldn't be so nervous.

Whenever I get nervous, I try and think about everything that is making me nervous, all of it, at one shot, and then I just say FUCK IT LETS DO IT (while concentrating on those thoughts), and I'm good to go.

When you think about it.. what's the worst thing that can happen? People will laugh? Big woop. You can always just run out of the room and cry in your car, and still, people will think you're joking! Say whatever you want to say beforehand, because in all honesty, there is NOTHING to be afraid or nervous about. Nothing bad will happen to you. You may never be asked to do it again, but hell, that's a blessing in disguise so maybe you should fuck up on purpose afterall?

I did give a lot of thought to why I was so nervous. It pretty much comes down to the unforgivable nature of public speaking. Do it bad, say something offensive, look like a pussy --- it's there, for all to see. No erasing that shit.

That alone is sucky... but the thing that pushed the pressure so high for me was that I really wanted to give my buddy a speech that was good. He is the kind of person that is good to everyone, and lotsa people shit all over. He had disappointing family members blow off the reception... he had some crappy friends screw him over. I just really wanted to come through for it.

good job dude, i was so happy after i finished doing mine, like a big weight off my shoulders

The only time I gave a best man speech I was so nervous I was shaking and couldn't read my notes so I had to sit down and deliver it.

It went across really well though, and the scrunched up pieces of paper I'd written it on are part of the wedding album.
