Before you introduced the monkey page, how did you get around the Adwords rules for sending them straight to the merchant? I know you used a forwarding domain, but even so, that never works for me!

It's not like it's in their TOS or anything.
I send quite some AdWords traffic directly to the landing page and am doing pretty well :xomunch::xomunch:

You're right. I've always thought it *was* in the TOS but after closer reading:

"We also monitor and do not allow the following:
  • Redirect URLs: Ads that contain Display URLs that automatically redirect to the parent company."
It's only if you're using a misleading display URL, I guess. Or is it? I'm confused.

So, if it's not against the TOS, how do you get around it if they disable your ad? Is there a loophole or is it just luck?
One other thing fenryr, do you use a forwarding domain?

I was masking through my registrar - GoDaddy. In your domain management, you can have it forwarded, then apply a mask, which is in reality just a frame.

Nah I don't use forwarding domains at this time.
Yea I guess it's all about luck with the redirecting affiliate links..sometimes they disable the ad, sometimes they don't.. I'm trying frames now..

And reality sets in...

Okay, after two days, here's what's happened:

Hits from Adwords 429 - 6 from SERPs / 423 from content network
Sales 2
Revenue $25.50
Cost $52.28
Net (26.78)

Looking through my keywords and negative keywords, I feel that they are very focused. There are three things that I believe I did wrong:

1. My monkey page was a little (lot) off. I was missing a lot of opportunities there. In other words, there was a lot of information / banners / etc. that should have been included. I know that's vague, but I plan on continuing to work this for a little while, so I don't want to give everything up yet.

2. I underestimated the cost of the bids. So, my ads are buried on the SERP's pages, but they are getting cheap clicks ($0.09 to $0.12)
from content pages.

3. I believe my ad copy needs work. Funny thing is, the ad that I thought was the cheesiest, got the best conversion.

So, as I start a new campaign for an unrelated niche, I'm going to be more diligent about my landing page's content. Continue to work on focused, selling keywords, and ad copy.

More updates later.

take it slow though
I lost 700$ in ringtones in one month once

Ouch!

Yeah, I'm making sure that I set the max bids at something affordable, and setting my daily limits fairly low, around $25 or less. I'm also setting up the end date for only one or two days out. That way if I forget that I have a PPC program set up, it won't eat me alive.

Content network does not really lead to targeted hits. Most people lose money on ringtones in the content network - even friend Shoemoney admitted that. ;)

Optimize for search and get really targeted traffic.

Also, keep in mind that many big guys make a lot of ringtone money from organic traffic.

Chris

I thought ringtones were the big money maker. Everyone wants ringtones right? Did shoemoeny make his fortune off them? So why is it so difficut to make money with the ringtones now? I mentioned it many months ago here why they dont work for most people.

A lot of people still insist ringtones are very rpofitable but I mostly hear of people losing money when trying to promote them with Adwords.

Promoting ringtones with myspace may be a better bet because it doesn't cost money per click and you can target your visitors well using filters.

Who's promoting ringtones? I mentioned Shoe's article because it has some great points about keywords that I found helpful.

I haven't said what I'm promoting, and I'm not going to until I'm no longer promoting said item.

BTW, anybody know how to turn the content network off?

From the main campaign page, check the campaign you wanna disable the content network for, click edit settings and un-check the content network on that page.

Nevermind, what he said.

Thanks EHamilton! I got the content network turned off. Upped my bids a little bit, and completely reworked my landing page.

I wasn't planning on touching the bids, but I spoke to my affiliate manager and it was recommended that the bids be changed. So, since they've been doing this just a little longer than I have, I thought that it might prudent to listen.

Btw, you might want to take those "advices" with a grain of salt. I have spoken with MANY affiliate managers in my time and only few of them actually understood how Adwords works. Most of them just think that higher bids == more traffic == more potential sells for them, and they don't really give a shit if you lose money. Why they don't care? Because you obviously don't know what you are doing if you have to ask them what to do so you don't probably last very long so why not squeeze those few extra sales out of you.

I don't doubt you are correct Micfire. This particular acct manager is probably the only one that I completely trust.

/edit/ turned out he was right. see following post.

Things are really coming together!

Here's the update:

The last day of 2006 kicked ass! My first triple digit day!

I made $312, and only spent about $70 or so with MSN and Google.

This morning my account was sitting at $60. I made the mistake of staring at it all day, so by nighttime I was getting ready to pull the plug. I logged in about 8:30pm CST and about fell out of my chair! My account was up to $320! Yeah, I started hooting and hollering like an idiot, but you know what? I made over $300 in one day! I think I deserve to hoot and holler.

Anyhow...for those of you that are still struggling (like me) just keep at it. When you get your breakout day, tell the world! It feels great.

Now if I can continue to do this consistently for about a month or two, I'll be free of "the man"!!

:rasta:

congrats SEO Mike! i'm looking forward to experiencing that 'breakout day' on arbitrage! i'm just breaking even right now because of the layout update I did, i'm going to revert back to the old one and do some more tests

Good luck man! Be sure to let us all know when it happens!!

I've still to try PPC arbitrage seriously. I took a couple stabs at it (very small / short campaigns) and didn't do so well. That'll be my next thing, but for this month I'm going to concentrate on affiliate stuff.
