Golfers - Is golf not as popular anymore?

I don't play golf and don't know shit about golf, but my friend asked me to help him out with a few things on his golf site. It's mostly golf lessons, instructional stuff, he sells DVDs, etc.

Anyway while doing some research I typed golf lessons into google trends and it looks like search volume for the term "golf lessons" has been dropping every single year for the past 6 years. Anyone know why this might be?

Like I said I don't know anything about golf. My first thought was that most people typing in golf lessons are probably looking for a local pro to take paid lessons from, and maybe it's just the shitty economy over the past few years ... but the way the search volume drops every single year for 6 years is weird.

Anyone have any theories?

Economy is shitty right now, A lot of people probably can't afford to go golfing anymore. And ever since that tiger incident and his shitty playing, people don't seem to care anymore.
 
Economy is huge right now. I use to work at a 5 star golf course and when this recession (I mean depression) hit we got hit hard. It all of a sudden got harder for people to pay over $400 a round.

Tiger also had a HUGE influence on the game. Unless someone rises up and takes his spot it may trend down for a while, but I think it'll be fine long term.
 
fucking world economics can suck donkey dick. half of the golfers today may be playing the game on their consoles.

From everything I've read there has been more people taking up the sport every year in the past 10 years than ever before. Thelorax is right, that Tiger is a big part of getting people into the sport. The problem is that the price of gear and greens fees keeps going up to the point where it's nearly a game for the wealthy. If I may do a quick plug for my golf blog, I actually did a post about this a few weeks back.

When we first moved to the Costa del Sol 6 years ago there were around 50 courses within an hour's drive of us. Now there's over 60 I think, maybe even 70. I don't think the popularity of the game has gone down at all.

Lessons are expensive, I think that's all it is really.

I love the seasonal patterns in the trends chart though, with the little spike at Christmas time.
 
older crowd grew up with golf... and are now passing it down to their kids... no need to take expensive lessons anymore

While you may be correct, sitting there watching a video of someone describing a perfect golf swing, or tennis serve, has like 5% of the effectiveness that having a real pro/coach there with you.

I think if you're really interested in playing sports like tennis n' golf, setting aside $300-$400 for a couple months worth of lessons is worth it. I took about 10 1 hour tennis lessons (at $50 a piece) and it was huge in helping me get all the shots down.. Shit I could have never learned watching as much tennis on tv as I had.

Went to the driving range with a friend earlier in the week, and we were both saying how we should pay for a lesson to two to get someone to correct our bad swings. You're not learning shit about that from a video watching someone else that you will be able to transfer over to your own.

Golf is for drinking and closing business deals. Its a sport for people who know how to be closers.

Apologies for how drunk that message was -- I usually hold myself to a higher standard.
 
I disagree with most posts faulting the "recession" for the decline in the popularity of golf. The number of people who play has remained flat or declined every year since 2000. This was long before current financial problems, and Tiger's infidelity.

It really comes down to a shift in American culture. Gone are the days of stay-at-home moms, and dads who spend their weekends closing business deals on the course. I love "Mad Men" just as much as the next guy, but for most of us, it's not a life we've ever experienced.

I could go on and on, but I'll spare you. If I were to run something golf related, I'd try to take a family bonding angle. These days, it's cool to spend time with your kids, wtf?
