Business plan writing/finding start-up funding

Sorry for a mild thread hijack but I am curious to how many people in internet marketing actually write business plans vs. those who sort plan it out in a less organized fashion, I mean its not like it needs to be presented to anyone?

business plans come in handy for getting loans from wealthy institutions/people. basically people who don't know what the interwebs are.

haha I still have my original business plan. What a complete waste of time!
In about the third month of business the entire plan went out the window.

The reality of it is, business plans are pretty worthless. They're necessary for VC and having something to show someone. Beyond that they become obsolete the moment reality of the business sets in. The whole idea behind them is to get you thinking about every aspect of the business. So your brainstorming isn't limited to "who sells toiletpaper made out of money for when i'm rich." However most business plan outlines result in you coming up with 1 page of a proposal and repeating it for another 70 pages in different words and bullshit filler.

haha my business plan says shit like "helping the community" and "building a solid business for the community" like a hundred fuckin times. I'm yet to even join the chamber of commerce. Do the business plan for others, document your brainstorm and problem solving for yourself.

If you can get past that How to Write a Business Plan is on Donald Trump's site, there is a some good info on writing a business plan.

I didn't get a chance to look through all of this one, but it looked like it could be helpful How to Find Start-Up Funding

ha ha that shit doesn't work. learn how to code. Then employ yourself. leanr how to make money the ez way. dont be a small business start up go broke fool

I disagree - business plans can be very valuable.

  1. As already mentioned, to obtain financing.
  2. To estimate potential revenue so you yourself will know if this is a worthwhile business to start
  3. To evaluate and strategize how to approach the competition, how to position yourself against the competition and how to tell the customer why to choose you instead of the competition
If you're just making websites then I agree, business plan isn't all that necessary. Unless of course, your website will demand a hefty investment to get up and running. Even then, the Internet is much more "hit or miss" and hard to predict potential profit so unless your idea is off-the-wall amazing, you'll probably have a hard time securing investment.

If however, you're dealing with a bricks and mortar business, I would highly suggest a business before spending money on rent, inventory, supplies, advertising only to find out you can't be profitable and/or there is no room for growth.

Just my 2 sense.

yea but your still gonna need to know how to program the site or create a smaller scale verison of your larger business plan to prove it is viable b4 a bank gives you money.

this is true, it helps. I got approved for another $2000 from my local economics and labor departartment because I proved to them that a pay per click model of business works. I just wrote up a business plan and showed them some stats on one of my sites. Now those lazy gov people need to hand me my money already...Having a working model helps, even if it's just little stats.

yeah, got me a brand new dell m1210 out of them (loving it), I would have preferred some advertising money but it didn't work out that way until this week when they approved me for a marketing budget. They are a pain in the ass to work with but it's been worth the hassle so far.
