15-story Hotel Constructed in 6 Days

Looks ugly, but mad impressive.. Curious to know how costs would compare if they had fewer resources but stretched development out over a longer period.. Pretty sure the difference would be substantial.

Don't feel bad, that's what you can do with cheap labor- All prefabbed- hundreds of people running around, 7, count 'em SEVEN cranes. In a union town like Chicago, cranes that size run 4-500 an hour- even up to a grand, about $3500 a day or more.

And it wasn't 6 days, it was 24/7 which makes it more like 18, or almost 4 weeks. You would puke to see what the overtime bill would be here for a stunt like that, lol.

Still very cool, though- I wish we could do that here, but Americans have this thing about living well, and want so damn much monies... And the Chinese will trick to that eventually, and we'll get parity, just a matter of when.

We should not fear the growth of China, so long as their government has no violent inclinations. Of course, that in itself is inevitable because scarcity (specifically, lack of resources) can and often does lead to instability and violence.

That said, the demise of one power and the rise of another has been the prevailing nature of the human race since the beginning. So as far as I see it, my job is not to sit around in fear but rather take advantage of it. Being entrepreneurs means we're here because we believe in profit and the best opportunities to profit surface during times of change.

You wont find this happening in America because we are completely resistant to change these days especially in the trades industry. From what I've seen American tradesmen (plumbers, framers, HVAC, etc) are some of the most stubborn people out there and will resist change at all cost.

We're still making wood stick-built houses with copper piping and sticking our nose up at the metric system.

There are many higher quality building systems now including ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) that have caught on in other countries but not here. These things are beautiful.. they stack like legos and are then filled with rebar and concrete. Very simple to use and have earthquake, tornado, and fire resistance- not to mention the incredible insulation R-Values.

PEX tubing is far cheaper, quicker and easier to use for plumbing than copper but most people just wont make the switch because it's not what they're used to.

Another good thing that hasn't caught on are geothermal HVAC systems. Saves a ton on heating/cooling costs and if more used them then the initial cost of the units would be much less than they are now. This reduces the need for fossil fuels immensely.

We deserve to be knocked down the totem pole a bit. Maybe then we'll be more open to new ideas and work harder to become a great country again.

Labor unions. Nuff said.

They like that nuclear power too-smart. Last time the misinformed environmentalists blocked nuclear we got coal, with it's related pits and mercury and radioactive emissions.

This time around, we have the same people blocking nuclear while playing right into the hands of the gas industry(fracking). Solar and wind need to be load balanced by gas, and they are not going to kill fracking. Nuclear would, helped by geothermal heat pumps. We should even be burning more wood in efficient systems and responsibly foresting, instead of allowing gas and oil companies to have the public pay for surface maintenance while laying claim to their mineral rights on public forests.

Let's see if China can crush coal with nuclear here. Make us look like fools thinking these current tech turbines and solar panels are going to be cleaner.

QFT

I know many who work construction and refuse to work now because they "don't get paid enough". They make more off unemployment doing side jobs or sitting on their ass

International hi-tech industries inc (IHI), based in Vancouver with factories in the Netherlands, launched in 1999 - goal: combining computer technology with construction. In a nutshell your architectural drawings are scanned and the bots build panels made of steel frames, rigid foam walls and a surface of concrete with all the electrical wiring and plumbing encased and routed throughout the walls, floors are pre-fabbed as well. Its then bolted together on site, the interior design/decorating (finishing touch) is done manually. An earth quake proof structure with many energy saving features. (similar approach to warehouse tilt-ups but more elaborate and dedicated to the residential market)

They built a 4000 square foot home in 2 days in BC Place stadium as example. They claim this would save up to 30% of building costs. They went public then stagnant up till now - didn't catch on. Why? Would kill the industry, suppose.
