Hyundai takes on BMW/Mercedes/Lexus

Also, the reason most German cars are worth 2x -3x more is based on their brand name and perceived value.

I see Mercedes and BMW in the shops all the time for repairs at no less % then a Ford, Toyota, or any other car.

I always be seeing cars on the road "Service Loaner from Ray's BMW" and shit.

Brands like NordicTrack and Schwinn are perfect examples of companies that USE to make good shit and had high perceived quality and value. However, both of these companies produce shit now you can buy at Walmart. If you ask anyone today, most of them would say Schwinn is a good bike and NordicTrack makes great shit and would value them higher then competitors.

And as a marketer are you surprised?

Not at all, but that's why I don't let resale value or perceived value influence my purchasing.

Schwinn and NordicTrack are just 2 examples of paying more $$ for what they think is value, but the fact is they are shit products now.

Wither its a home, car, or whatever, I buy based on my personal experience with it and facts. Not what some bluebook/blackbook tells me and for sure not based on prior assumptions and generalized/perceived ideas.

Have you driven an Audi or BMW? They definitely aren't shit products. The fact that I brought up resale value is to prove a point that Hyundai needs to improve it's image before they try to compete against audi, bmw, mercedes, etc.

Apparently you've never driven a hyundai either because if you did, you'd realize I'm not pulling these figures out of my ass or listening to what "some bluebook/blackbook tells me."

It's the same exact situation as when Japanese cars started coming around. Started out producing economical cars, then worked their ways up to tackling the Germans. Just give the Koreans time, they'll figure out the formula.

Funny you should even bring such nonsense into this thread.

I actually have owned a 5 series and have driven an r8 that my friend owns. I have never driven a Mercedes, however my old boss had one he bought new that always was in the shop.. so much so he would just drive his jag to work everyday and sold the Merc about a year of owning it because of all the problems.

As far as Hyundai, I test drove the Genesis for about 4 days when it first hit the dealerships here. I have also test drove a Sonata. I have also test driven several Lexus's as well so I am no stranger to testing out higher end cars.

I liked the Genesis as much as I did the 5 series. The r8 is a bit of a stretch as we are talking totally different classes of cars so I wont say I like the Genesis more then the r8.

I ended up settling on getting 2 SUV's instead because of where I live and the fact I have my spouse and 3 kids to drive around when we do something, and the fact I haul 2 boats as well. So I haven't driven the newest 2011 BMW's and Mercs.

Yup, exactly. Toyota did it with Lexus in a similar way. In the 80s, most Americans would never spend $40k+ on a Japanese car. But over the last two decades, their competitive pricing and quality got them to their current position.

The only way to penetrate the super competitive auto manufacturing market is to beat your competition at price. This is the only way Hyundai can bring up its name. But they did it with the Sonata and have I no doubt they will be doing it with Equus. It may not be this year or the next, but damn sure within 10 years.

Look at their market share and growth of the last 7-8 years when they went after quality and started programs like America's Best Warranty. Even through the recession, they are one of the only car companies in the world to show huge growth.

They might be trying to reposition the brand. It would be interesting to see what they'll be doing in the next months / couple years.

If this will be the only thing they do to enter the luxury/classy market, it's a sure fail.

As of now, nobody would spend that much on a hyundai.

People said that about Lexus too back in the day when compared to Mercedes and Lexus was able to get a good foothold in the market

I have owned sports cars and SUV's my entire car buying life. I recently had a stroke of bad luck and got rid of my trucks and decided after some thought to go with an economical 4 door sedan that got better than the 17mpg I was used to.

I consider myself a "car guy" so I went off into an OCD induced research phase that lasted 2 months before I decided what I was going after. I then went off and drove approx 25ish cars from Honda, Toyota, Dodge, Kia and Hyundai

Long of the short, the Hyundai does what the rest do for much cheaper. The same Hyundai with all things being equal vs the others was always on average $5k cheaper

I have had mine (used) now for 45 days and I love it. My friends who have seen it said it was a good move and the cars have come a long way. I can go into details as to why I like it but overall its hard to complain. Getting 30MPG of mixed driving and 430 miles per tank now is SWEEET

I did drive the Genesis and its unreal that its called a Hyundai. This new car is a market research project from them to see if they can compete. If it fails Hyundai will continue selling their other models and not break a sweat.

Most of you are a lot younger than me so don't recall the years when Honda owners were laughed at. Honda cut their teeth on some shitty cars but it took a while before the Civic launched them to where we all know them currently. Scoff all you want at Hyundai and show your ignorance on how think that market works but they will definitely get the last laugh

not hating or promoting, just my 0.02

We test drove cars yesterday for the wife. The Sonata is far in the lead on pros/cons. The only downside was have down for the Sonata is the stigma that comes along with the Hyundai brand. That and my country ass wife can't say Hyundai.

I'm a big fan of Nissan, but driving the Murano and Max I was 100% turned off by that stupid CVT tranny.

Point is they have come a long, long way. Good looking car, has great lines.

Hyundai gotta be aggressive in moving its brand upmarket. You can't just compete for value.

The Japanese learned what Hyundai hasn't yet- you can't sell a $100,000 dollar honda unless it's an NSX.

hahah a $60,000 hyundai?

isn't this the company that had a whole series of branding commercials not 2 years ago where they were telling viewers how hyundai is pronounced? "hyundai...rhymes with sundae".

stupid

Funny you bring such nonsense into this thread. I've had an A8 for three years now haven't been in shop once other then regular/mandatory inspections. For you to say that BMW/Audi/Mercedes is shit is downright idiotic and arrogant. If you would've actually read what I was saying it was that in order to compete in the luxury automobile market, it would've made sense to improve their brand quality at the lower level.
