Wait, remote car starters?

Didn't want to crash Turbo's thread asking for recommendations, but really could stand to have something cleared up for me here:

What is the fucking point of a remote car starter? Is it like that bright blue light on a Bluetooth headset, just one more way to say "Hey world, look at me, I've got a gadget!" Or is there actually some kind of practical purpose to this concept?

Scenario: It's freezing cold outside. You don't want to walk out there to turn on your car and let it heat up. So you hit a button from inside your warm home instead.
That's it.

Or starting your black Lambo with leather seats in mid summer in Miami. Leave the AC cranked when you park. Remote start it at noon when you wake up and are ready to pick up more blow and hookers.

Love my remote starter, can't remember last time I had to brush snow off my windshield or scrape ice... =P

Yea, great if you live in the North East where it snows and is bitterly cold when you first get into your car. A few months ago I was thinking about attemping some kind of app for a remote car starter. Just recently I started seeing commercials for some car company doing shit like that. Remote unlocking, even shows them how much gas they have and stuff like that. Pretty cool stuff.

ive been meaning to get one. my ride gets way better mileage when its warmed up. less gas gets into the oil when the engines warmed up, so you can go a lil longer without an oil change but nothing too crazy.

My car takes a good 10 minutes to warm up, and it's a fucking 2006 altima. Nways like people above said, it's really something for people living in climates that get cold. I actually went cheap and didn't get it when it was only an extra $100 for my alarm setup. Now every time I have to sit in my car waiting for it to defrost the windows, I get a friendly reminder of what this experience "could" have been like. (driving off without waiting)

Shit, I should just get it done. Damn you wickedfire for making me do things that I'm supposed to do.

Before my SUV shit the bed recently I had a remote car starter, best money I've ever spent. You wake up, it's a fucking full blown blizzard outside and you just press a button to start your car. When you get out there the car is all warm, heat is melting snow off the windshield and loosening it up, it's one of man's best inventions ever.

Wouldn't recommend it for bikes, though. I had one on mine and one day started it up, some dude jumped on it and took off.

True story.

Try hopping in a car that's been sitting in 20 below weather all night... you won't ever ask again.

OK, the climate thing makes sense. It snowed here in February ... for the first time since 1993. I think I understand why no one I know owns one of these things or seems to have plans to buy one. If it's cold out in the morning, I walk down the stairs and turn on the truck before I load up the kids, but it's never really that cold.

I have a remote control starter thing but it's only good if the car doesnt have a sheet of ice over it.

And unless you remember to exit the car the night before with the HEAT on full blast, and the DEFROST controls set to ON, it won't necessarily serve any purpose other than to warm the engine properly...

They need a new geek gadget which turns on the HEAT to full blast, and optional defrost button, along with windshield wiper control for the ultimate in "I'm keeping my ass warm for as long as I possibly can and staying in the house" feeling.

its one of those small things that shouldn't make a difference but once you have it and get used to it you wonder how you ever survived without it.

it exists and is called climate control :)

Like in my car I set the temperature i want and it always keeps the car that temperature and the defrost/seat warmers is on automatic all the time. So when i hit the remote start and the car comes on it reads the inside temperature and if its colder than my settings it turns on the heater. If its warmer then it turns on the air conditioner until the temperature inside the car matches my settings. Since the defrost and seat warmers are on automatic if its cold or icy they come on as well.

I doubt the two are tied together or need to be. I think its just any car with climate control does that when the car turns on whether from the remote or the key. But the two together makes it seem more fancy than it is.

That sux for bikes. Cars are suppose to shut off once you put your foot on the brakes without the key in the ignition or without the key inside the car for those with smart key.

Dude, you obviously never been to Canada. When it's -30C/-20F outside, and your entire car is covered with a foot of snow, and your windshield is covered in a thick crust of ice, your oil is cold and thick, the steering wheel so cold it burns your hand, you'd appreciate having a remote starter.
