For those of you who missed this challenge by Ted.com I figured I'd post the video because it got me thinking about how true this actually is, I know myself personally have placed ads in front of a group of people which were intrusive instead of complimentary to the content.

TED Partnerships: Ads Worth Spreading

I think this little talk kind of takes us back to the basics but even though it's nothing exceptional it got me thinking about new things to try out and it kind of kick started the creative thinking again.

So there it is, if you haven't seen it watch it and maybe it'll kick start some creative thinking for you as well.

P.S. I tried to embed the video but I feel really stupid today and it didn't work. Maybe I shouldn't be considering testing out my Creative Thinking until tomorrow.

Ted is uncool can't see video on iPhone, I'll retry when I get out the toilet and back on my comp

Hm interesting competition, but usually all the viral videos can be listed for that contest.. those are the ads which are worth spreading, but again not because of the advertised product but because of the video content...

Yeah I agree that the competition it self may be a little obscure and not focused so much on Ads Worth Spreading over just having a good solid viral video however I do believe in what he is saying that the advertising industry is broken in a way.

If you sit down and look when your browsing the internet you'll see thousands of examples of un-targeted ads, shit even on high profile sites that you think there would be targeted ads there really isn't.

For instance Vevo.com, now here is a great music video site which is organized a lot better then most other music sites on the net, for each video they know who the singers are in the videos, they know the song names, the song production dates, ect....

However when viewing a video about lets say a new song on a new album from Sean Kingston I see advertisements pointed to another artist in a related Genre, now this is an example of an advertisement which is targeted to the Genre (so it's not completely un-targeted).

However with the data that company has there is absolutely no reason why a video playing a new Sean Kingston song shouldn't be displaying an advertisement to Sean Kingston's new album which that song is on.

Additionally there ads usually point to iTunes which makes it that much more easier to take an artist name and song name and find the album on iTunes and have there API return back a targeted advertisement.

Now more and more around the web on video sites like YouTube your beginning to see the old TV commercials pop up which is more intrusive then positive and isn't always the best way to obtain a conversion.

Its a complex topic to think about because if your ads are intrusive but are profitable then you are not really concerned about it and most people don't want to branch out and test something that could very well lower profitability for more brand awareness but on the other side of things if your conversions are not the best with intrusive advertising maybe it is a good thing to start putting your ads in places that amplifies the content instead of ambushes the user.

At which point you can also make the advertisement more engaging, including a more social and viral call to action instead of just saying hey come over here and purchase this product or service.

Thought this said AIDS worth spreading

haha well at least it caught your attention.

It's actually the first time that I hear about the challenge - and I do find it interesting. It reminded me of all the cool ads that I've seen in recent years that were genius, I still don't think I'm going to participate but thanks for sharing it.

Nah I think the person who is watching a video from his new album is familiar with his new album, so it's better to upsell him to a different musician with the same genre.

Hm and again he has compared tv ads to internet ads.. that again cannot be done, I think people are ignoring tv ads as much as people are ignoring internet ads.. from my family everyone just switches to an other channel when there is an ad brake.. and I think they thought that everyone just stays on the same channel..

this goes for the internet ads also, everyone is just ignoring them and I think thats not because those ads are untargetted, people just don't care and the ads aren't offering anything new.. maybe the problem is with the amount of ads :) we see advertisement all over the place. on internet, on the streets, in the radio, tv etc.etc and we just got used to ignore them :)

Good point didn't consider the up-sell when I wrote that but nonetheless I like this type of topic because well it's an argument that can go either way.

In one sense you can say that advertising on the net is broken and intrusive however on the other hand of things if your profitable from your advertising then even though it may be intrusive you may not consider it to be broken.

I think what this Ted challenge is more about is finding a way to create an engaging advertisement which isn't intrusive (Which in a small way can increase your brand) but at the same time be just as if not more profitable and more so creating an advertisement that isn't ignored but instead engaged by the user.
