Obama Plans to Create Internet ID for All Americans

"I don't have to get a credential, if I don't want to," he said.

Ya, and you don't 'have' to get a drivers license or social security number either, unless you want to, you know, rent a place to live, drive a car, get a job, start a business, get married, etc - you know, live.

I can see this being useful for government services - would be helpful to have a single-sign-on for state/federal/local taxes. I think I have 10+ different logins between personal and business for those. Would be really helpful for verifying identity in any of these services rather than doing the roundabout "PIN in the mail" and other methods.

From the article:
"We are not talking about a national ID card," Locke said at the Stanford event. "We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy, and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities."
I have a feeling that this will come more as security recommendations and specifications, with ability to verify personal info - probably out of NIST, as they're really the driving force in technology implementation standards on the government side.

From the release @ U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard A. Schmidt Announce Next Steps to Enhance Online Security, Planned National Office for Identity Trust Strategy | Department of Commerce :
In the NSTIC vision, businesses would enjoy new market opportunities, with the ability to deliver services and transactions previously considered too risky. Government would be able to expand online services for constituents, so they can operate with greater efficiency and transparency; remove impediments to e-commerce; and increase public safety by bolstering the integrity of networks and systems.

Appears to be mostly for government services and high-risk transactions requiring some sort of significant verification.

Sounds like a decent idea on the government services side.

You don't have to get a birth certificate to prove you are actually born in America to be president either, oh wait...

But people tend to get around that. ;)

Honestly, I see this as just one more thing to be used to steal people's identity on a much more massive scale if not done properly (and it won't be) that will cause a massive issue. It's already super easy to get your SSN from hospitals and doctor's offices if you know where and how to do it, and rack up massive charges in the process that forces someone to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get their life back. All this does is make it even more direct to get all the information they need about you and your habits, and even give them more information about the potential to do more damage.

This is a pointless government service unless they plan on forcing people into using this. They may say its optional now, but that would change. All they need is one excuse to change something from optional to mandatory.

Ooooh. I wanna pick my username and password now!!!!!

USER: FuckYouObamaYouIgnorantCommunistIllegalAlienCockSucker

Will read again.

We have a govt gateway SSO ID in the UK for accessing all HM Government services. It's really handy, esp if you have a business and loads of filing to do.

No way would I use it for commerce though.

FTFA:
Details about the "trusted identity" project are remarkably scarce. Last year's announcement referenced a possible forthcoming smart card or digital certificate that would prove that online users are who they say they are. These digital IDs would be offered to consumers by online vendors for financial transactions.

Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. "I don't have to get a credential, if I don't want to," he said. There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge," and "we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this," he said.

If they're ok with it not being a government project, then why not use one or more of the workable and stable systems that are already out there, eg. OpenID, PGP, and derivatives -- some of which have been around for nearly twenty years?

Exactly, Its probably just another strategy to keep an eye on the every-ones movements.
