I wasn't the only SEO there, one of three and the last one hired. So, I got it in the ass. Actually, the changed my job a few weeks ago to something else in marketing, so I think that was really why I was included.

No, I worked from an office, even though I could realistically do everything from home, they didn't want that. I was really sick once and offered to work from home. The boss checked with HR and was told "NO!!!" Not sure why, it's not like I was doing anything that would've required access to work's computers/db's.

Mike, I know it sucks. I've been laid off once. I was lucky that I had advance notice. But it really sucked that I had just bought a bigger brand new house. But like everyone here already said, things happen for a reason.
You can't get depressed about it (I know one dude I worked with he went into major depression and had to move his family into his parents house). You can't feel sorry for yourself or let this bother you. You have a family to feed. Try to cut cost if you can. And start looking for a job right away. Don't fall into the bullshit that I'll take a break. And ramp up you AM. Hell, even look into doing eBay. That shit saved my ass once but that was in the beginning and I ended up being a titanium seller. But eBay isn't what it use to be. But who knows, maybe you'll get lucky, like I did.
But the bottomline is to stop the negative cash flow. You don't want to get into a hole that you can't get out of. So good luck. If you need any help with anything, just shot me a pm.

It may not be easy, but the most important thing is to stay calm and objectively look at your options.
Leverage on your time at ASW and if there're contacts among the AMs that might be able to use your skills, especially on the affiliate usability side of things, that coupled with your SEO/SEM skills might give you a leg up.
Growing organizations will always be on the lookout for good people, so it's a matter of positioning yourself and working something out that will help you achieve your long term goals.
I've been doing my own thing for the past 5 years, and things have always worked out. The biggest bonus for me has been being able to call my own shots and having lots of time to spend with my daughter.

When you say disabled I thought you meant your adsense account.
i don't see why a firm would give you that kind of a message via computer. Wouldn't they hand you a plink slip or notify you face to face?
if you want to make money with SEO find clients who are clueless about search engines (asside fomr the fact they exist and they are useful) and pitch your skills. Don't promote SEO services to a company with savvy people or a technology company.
I worked for a telecom company in the late 90's. I started when telecom was hot shit, and as you remember, things did not stay that way. So anyway our company had been bought out a couple of times when we got called into a company wide meeting. We had seen it before and thought we knew what was happening. It started off as usual. "We've been bought by xxx company. Things are brighter than they've ever been. We are going to strenthen our place in the market by focusing our synergies... And if you get back to your desk and you have no keyboard, you no longer have a job. Take care and go team." WTF? The place was shady as hell.

Anyhow, I'm maintaining a positive attitude. As the day progressed and the IM's and PM's poured in, I realized that this was for the best. With my paycheck tomorrow, the severence pay, our tax refund, and my affiliate stuff, I could actually sit on my ass for a month and not do anything, but I'm not going to.
Talking to Kyle via IM and he put it into perspective, I made $35000 per year (remember I live in OMAHA) so that's about $95 per day. I can do that easy. So, at this point, I'm actually in a good mood about getting fired. It happened for a reason, and I'm going to make the best of it.

Mike $95 a day should be easy to profit. Let me know what i can help out with. I am sure anyone else on this board will help as well. If you want to sell your SEO services try signing up to places like guru.com (I think thats the site) we had an asshat working for us who thought buying SEO services was smart and he pointed that site out to me, so maybe you will find other asshats who are willing to drop money on SEO. You should be able to charge 2-3K per month for the work. But honestly if i was you i would devote the time to my own SEO for my affiliate stuff in addition to the other methods you can use in AM.
Fuck your former employer they only held you back, in a few months you'll be thankful that they set you free.
My second cousin used to work for my grandfather, my grandfather fired him because he sucked. Well he ended up marrying the daughter of the man who owns Phillips 66 Petroleum. Needless to say the guy is filthy rich and wouldn't be so if he didn't get fired. I hope the same happens to you
