Facebook worth $15B, wait I mean $50B, scratch that, now $70B

that comparison is founded! The google business model is extremely solid if you compare it to facebook, not only they are the leader in a vital internet need (search) a well deserved lead if you ask me but they also have "diversification" (Youtube, Chrome, Google earth, GMAIL..) google is everywhere.

Facebook on the other hand is just like the best restaurant or bowling center in town, people will give up "socializing" in facebook the minute a better "restaurant" or "entertainment" center show up in town, facebook killed myspace, and will face the same doom when the next coolest thing shows up.

and wtf, 70 billions for a company making a net benefit of 250 millions a year ? i know it's more complicated than that, but i can't help thinking that i'll need to live 280 more years to make my investment back.

You should really give some thought to changing your username, because you have so little knowledge of their business model. Read up a little bit on it here Facebook, the Open Graph and Game Dynamics – Controlling Your Online Future | College Reviews and when you realize that they are in possession of people's digital identities (demographics to the tenth power) and how much marketers are willing to pay for that maybe you'll start to get it. Then when they launch their content network in 2012 and displace adsense it will start to make more sense.

I don't claim to know how much Facebook is worth, but I do know if you think they're just like MySpace you have no understanding of business models.

Deja Vu. Didn't we go through this last month?

Anyway, In Bizman's defense I'd like to point out that the business world, at least the one that trades on wall street, doesn't make such wild bets as to throw down billions of $$s on a hope that in 1.5 or 2 years some new profit model pays off!

On wall street there is Fundamental analysis, and technical analysis. Future profit models aren't represented by either. Especially one as far away as 2012.

Something else is going on here. For there to now be a $70B pricetag where any profit at all is brand new I'm dammed surprised.

It was quite eye-opening the other day at the mall when my wife was asked if she would like a free necklace or bracelet (about $15 value) just for "Like"ing the store right then and there in front of the clerk... The like button has just been elevated to currency, IMO.

But not $70B worth of it! There is more to this story being left out than just the future plans for the open graph.

Hey guys, affiliate marketers know more about company valuations than large financial institutions. News at 11.

Hah! Have you paid attention the last 4 years?

Do you really still think that large financial institutions are too smart to make stupid mistakes?

Large financial institutions are often handcuffed into decisions by large short term gains and the whole 'well if we don't do it someone else will' mentality.....

Hence the housing/lending bubble.

But hey .... if you think that the tech bubble in 2000 and the housing bubble in 2006 had nothing to do with large financial institutions then I have a house for sale for 1.5million and one of my website is worth 3million, interested?

Ok, so you're saying that affiliate marketers DO know more about company valuations than large financial institutions?

Hrmmmm.... no i was saying that it would be unwise to just accept any valuation that comes from 'large financial institutions' just because they are 'large financial institutions'.

Also there are probably some people on this forum that understand facebook's business model better than SOME (not all) of the people that have given facebook its valuation.

The same computer illiterate, nepotistic, corporate climbers, are at the upper echelons of these corporations making the final decisions on these things.

facebook lol over priced traffic investors getting hustled lol

1. start a business.
2. make sure its run by jews. if you missed step 1, invest all your monies in the jews.

If I was him...

1. go public
2. cash out
3. ??
4. spend rest of my life acquiring liabilities and fuckin bitches

If I were him I would buy an island, make it Facebook headquarters... and take over the world.

My little analysis of Facebook is that the business works on two levels. One, micro-transactions in games/apps etc. Two, the mother of all marketing databases. The amount of information that people are voluntarily putting on Facebook is simple amazing from a marketing point of view. The marketing database is the significant value in the Facebook company.

Think about it, when I use Google Adwords I can target people by what they are searching. I have no other information about the person. I don't know how old they are, I don't know what gender they are, and I don't know if they have a previous history of purchasing these products. Compare that with Facebook, where I can get ultra targeted views for my ads. Hell, I can target 22 year old males who like red guitars with blue fret boards, on their birthday.

EDIT: On the $50 billion though, I don't know enough about how much marketing value can be extracted to say whether that is a fair valuation or not. If Facebook does ever become a ubiquitous tool, and hits 90%+ of web users, then...well welcome to Skynet :P
