Hello,

Does anyone use Pingdom to check the uptime / response time for their web sites?

If so - what would you consider an optimal response time (in ms) ?

Thanks

I'm getting response times of 1000+ ms from countries in Europe... is that typical?

... and about 300-500 ms in North America. Site loads quickly from what I can tell. Been with the same host for 3+ years too (a well known host too).

1,000ms for europe is pretty shitty, from the UK/europe should be closer to 6-700ms if you're getting 3-500ms from US. You're probably on cheap bandwidth. The rule of thumb is to expect response times for a single request to increase by 2-300ms with overseas requests.

I'm getting an average of 318ms in my Pingdom report selecting all the european locations ONLY (excluding everything not in EU)

Amsterdam 2, Netherlands
Copenhagen, Denmark
Frankfurt, Germany
London 2, UK
London, UK
Madrid, Spain
Manchester, UK
Paris, France
Stockholm, Sweden

to a VPS in Atlanta

Remember that there's a LOT of difference from a coast to the other, so ping times from Europe to a server in NY or Atlanta and to one in Seattle would be really different
