A University of Arizona researcher says you may want to grab one of those disinfectant wipes right before you grab a grocery cart.
Professor Charles Gerba, the lead researcher, swabbed the handles of 85 carts in four states for bacterial contamination.

Gerba says 72% of the carts had a positive marker for fecal bacteria. When they examined some of the samples, they found Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli, on half of them.

Researchers say they actually found more fecal bacteria on grocery cart handles than you would typically find in a bathroom, mainly because bathrooms are disinfected more often than shopping carts.

Since most stores do not routinely wash and disinfect their carts, it's up to you to do it.

Scientists say this study helps explain why earlier investigations found kids who touch the handles, are more likely than others, to get infected with bacteria like salmonella.

Gerba also says you should pay attention to what you put in reusable shopping bags. Make sure your meats and veggies are wrapped because bags that are not washed on a regular basis can become a what he called a "bacterial swamp."

This is why I always use a cart wipe when at the store.

Thats not nearly as bad as what you get from the Waite staff in nearly every restaurant. The good news is nearly everything we eat has had contact with "fecal Matter" during some part of the growing process, let alone the fact that money is loaded with it, so our bodies are pretty immune to it.

Sorry, that's my bad. I knew I shouldn't have defecated in the Vons shopping carts. Everyone, please use the lysol wipes provided. I'll try not to do it in the future. I can't guarantee I won't piss on them however.

WOW!Thia shows a lot about how the internet has changed the way I think. When you said 72% of shopping carts tested positive for fecal matter, I thought you were going to make a dig on MAgento or OScommerce.

Ditto, I saw it on drudge today and really only noticed the 72% of carts and I freaked out a bit that my Magento stores might have some security risk. Thank heavens its only poo on real shopping carts.

Too bad stores didn't have these...

Though nothing has really changed here other then your awareness that carbon and bacteria is everywhere.
We've been living with it all our existence, though past 100 years or so we've gotten cleaner.
Past 50 we've been finding poo on everything still though.

Makes me think of some of this Mythbuster episode...

For those with limited attention spans and/or schedules...

They set up tooth brushes all around an active bathroom at different distances from a toilet and they found..... (8.01 is the results)

Bottom line, we eat dirt and poo and spiders all the time.

Whether you can handle knowing that or not, well that's another story.
