Yes, i know college is a waste for the most part. That is not the question.

My mom is dead-set on me going, and I tried to tell her yesterday I wasn't. She flipped out. (I have been pretty successful in IM. Enough to live up to a decade without any income.) I tried to tell her its a waste of time and money, but she won't go for it. Does anyone have any good arguments I could pitch, or any good articles/studies(from reputable sources she will believe) that would get her to change her thoughts. She isn't even talking to me because I brought it up. I am enrolled the start in August, but I want to get out before then.

Yes, I know I could just go against them and go on my own but I don't want to do that to them. My parents were extremely good to me and I don't want to be a dick and just walk off against their wishes.

Who's paying for your schooling? You or Them?

If you are paying, then you have the right to decide. If its them paying for your education then take the offer and run with it.

A lot of people on this board will tell you college is a waste of time, money, etc etc..just a stupid piece of paper and so on.. etc..dolla dolla bills y'all.

But Ive gotta say. I am 25 and I havent even touched the piece of paper that is my degree, or used it at all in terms of my employment on and offline, but it was still the best thing that I have ever done. It opened doors, allowing me to teach abroad, and motivates you to think.

And..truth be told it isnt nearly as hard as people will tell you. You can float through and keep doing all of what you are doing, except you will now be able to network, meet new people, socialize etc..instead of being a basement dwelling affiliate marketer all of your life. Which is what most of us have become now anyways, amirite?

For the time it takes and the actual work you have to put in...just suck it up, get your degree, and then get out. At the very least it is a safety net you will enjoy having for the rest of your life.

There's no good reason to waste money going to college if you are happy with what you do to make a living. You've done this for 10 years? You are either getting a late start to college or started IM when you were 8...

I say go for the networking and experience, I am sure you can find some rich friends that could be a potential investor if you are any good.

But, in my experience I went for 2 years at University of Houston, and pretty much getting laid, smoking pot, and hardly showing up for class was my specialty. Its not so much education I am glad I got more of social experience and moving out of my parents house and having to do things on my own that I owe to college. Fact of the matter is if you don't want to and you have "10 years worth of income" move out and stop listening to your mom.

Wrong.

If you're not currently comfortable with making your own choices (this post as evidence), college will be a worthwhile experience for you.

I am saying I have funds to last me 10 years no problem.

college debt just surpassed credit card debt in the US. if that doesn't say that college doesn't pay like it used to, nothing ever will. ever. if you need to back this info up, google economist ___________.

that said, i would probably give up a decade on my life in return for holding onto what i experienced and learned in college. it ain't all about fuckin' dough. it really fuckin' ain't.

You can live for a decade without extra rev? Define.

In a decade a lot can happen. Marriage, kids, cancer, move to a place thats more expensive than your parents basement..

If you truly have 10 years of cushion then fuck it, whatever. But if you plan on living for under 1k a month for those 10 years maybe you should ponder things.

I am looking at 3k a month for 10 years. That is without any more work or investment earnings. I am sure within that time I will do something else successful.

THIS.

and,

Go to college, take 12 hour semesters, fuck bitches, get money.
This.

I feel like I can speak with a bit of authority on this subject; I'm 21, senior partner in my company, make *way* more money than I need, and I go to university anyways.

Why?

Because I'm not arrogant enough to think I have nothing left to learn. I'm in the business of business; and the more ideas I have in my head, the more ideas I can apply to my business.

Likewise, the future is unwritten. Shit, the government could go all wonky or a solar flare could wipe out the worlds electronics, and then where would I be?

Finally, knowledge - for its own sake, is a wonderful thing.

Oh, and the partys and women. ;)

1. Move out
2. Make moniez online
3. ???????
4. Profit

If your mother is logical, ask her to explain her reasons for wanting you to go. Deal with each one as an objection during a sales call. Be systematic until each objection has been addressed.

Does she want you to go because a degree ensures...

1. you'll get a job?

2. you'll meet a romantic partner?

3. you'll make connections that pay off later?

4. etc. You get the idea.

If your mother is emotional - and most women are - you're on your own. Unless you can tap into that emotional core and manipulate it, she'll never see it your way. You'd be wasting your time.

If they're paying 25% could you say you'll try it out for a year on their dime but after that it's your decision whether to continue on? May as well see what college is like and what you would be opting out of.
