I am not a huge gamer, but I do play some COD of here and there, and couldn't login to the network for a while.

Turns out it because it was hacked -
Sony: Hacker stole PlayStation users' personal info - CNN.com

70 Million accounts could have been compromised and they are still trying to figure out if that includes credit card data...Largest data theft ever?

Anyone worried?

I personally think its pretty bad that Sony waited this long to tell people. I think customers have a right to know right away if their information is compromised. I understand investigations need to take place, but if credit card data is included then PCI requirements state that they need to tell those cardholders.

And, if in fact credit card information was taken, then questions need to be asked as to whether Sony was following the PCI requirements....

Interesting Story to follow.

I wonder how many people killed themselves over not being able to play fifa'11 online in the meanwhile

None in America thats for sure.

definitely not anywhere near the "largest data theft ever"

there are hundreds of thousands of CC bins and dumps floating around the internet at any given time.

dont believe me? get on IRC server Undernet and join #ccpower.

i read that this could cost sony something like 2 billion dollars?
man japan can't get a break.
all their companies are hurting now also

It may have taken Sony a few days, even a week, to patch the exploit and get a complete understanding of what data was stolen.

It's better to hold off on an announcement until you get all the facts, or else you can put yourself in a situation where you have to change the story (which makes you look like a complete idiot).
