What's the point of this spam?

My traffic all of a sudden spiked, and I'm getting loads of contact form submissions from various countries and IPs all over the world with things like:

"The forum is a brighter place tahnks to your posts. Thanks!"

"Real brain power on dsiplay. Thanks for that answer!"

"That's the best ansewr of all time! JMHO"

The traffic is NOWHERE near enough to bring down the server, or even slow it down. There's no URLs or anything in the messages they send, so what's the point? Is this like the Indian version of a DOS attack, or something?

Prolly some noob that forgot to fill in the URL field of his blast, and is going to facepalm really hard in a few hours.

best guess: test for autoapproves, possibly because their spam has a 0% chance of making it through a manual filter but a good chance of getting ISP reports?

shit, so when it said "you did not enter a URL, are you sure you want to continue?" i should have said no?

1) Post non-spammy comments everywhere without URI to try to get approved since WP defaults to allowing those who have an approved comment to post future comments

2) Wait a few days, then run SB over your list of previously-posted links to see where your comment was approved

3) Have a field day posting comments to your new auto-approve list

Are you talking about WP blogs where you need to get register before posting a comment?, or just a regular one where you can comment directly.

Regular ones where you can comment directly. Default WP settings:

Much better chance of getting a comment approved the first time with no URI attached and a decent, relevant comment written towards the post.

This is.... so obvious.... that makes me feel really bad now. Thanks for sharing it.

One last question, the exact same username is the only thing you need correct?. And does it work with Discuss in the same way?

A lot of thought-provoking ideas that really took me by surprise. I share thoughts on many points. Really made me think. I will certainly post a link to %BLOGURL% on my site

please delete this thread/thanks

edit: can anyone verify whether the email@ also needs to be the same?
