John Lennon: Closet Republican and Reagan Fan?

So, when he was young and banging groupies, he was a liberal. Then when he was older with shitloads of money, he was more conservative. Imagine that.

According to books, he spent most of 1975-1980 holed up in an apartment doing drugs and was a total contradiction. Allegedly, he would go on and on about how everyone needed to be like Jesus and Gandhi, but then we would have angry episodes and also would take delight whenever anything bad happened to McCartney.

"Taxman" was written but Harrison, but Lennon also mentioned in interviews how ridiculous he thought it was that the UK was taking 95% from them at one point for taxes.

It must have happened later on in life because "Imagine" was definitely communist propaganda. Imagine no possessions? Oh, the irony.

EDIT: And reading the story we get this:

"He was a very different person back in 1979 and 80 than he'd been when he wrote Imagine. By 1979 he looked back on that guy and was embarrassed by that guy's naivete."

Useful idiots, take note!

It's not uncommon for people to claim to be liberal, but really be more libertarian. They do a pretty shitty job of actually teaching what these terms mean in schools.

You can criticize Imagine all day long, but I'm sure if you're loaded on heroin removing all the things that make people want to kill each other sounds like a viable solution, then you come down and realize how unfeasible it actually is.

You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone, anyhow

"Revolution" was inspired by political protests in early 1968. Lennon's lyrics expressed doubt about some of the tactics. When the single version was released in August, the political left viewed it as betraying their cause.
