.apple , .coke, .brands shake up comming

Would other people be able to buy those domain extensions or just the company that registers it?

people would have to buy them off the person that registered it, at whatever price they wanted to sell it (the domain) for.

This is totally going to take off just like the .travel extension completely revolutionized the travel websites online.

i can understand expanding to extensions with non-Latin characters but all this other stuff is flat out stupid.

good luck to anyone writing a regex to transform website mentions to clickable links...
... oh wait, nobody's going to be mentioning these ridiculous domains...

i had a thought about this, hence why im resurrecting this.

when you register your domain, we like to say that we own it, but we don't we're just leasing the domain for the given time period.

I wonder if the custom tlds give you some added level of protection, if apple owns .apple they can never be cybersquatted, they own that tld for life, they never have to worry about domains expiring, and they can easily create short domains for themselves

mac.apple
tv.apple
ipod.apple

This could actually be well worth the money for large corporations

also if it's permanent, what's stopping anyone from getting their own tld like .dude

And subletting the domain and become the exclusive registrat, boost up the prices, and no icann fees so boost up your profits

People are not gonna understand it. Most of them still think all domains start with www and end in .com.

^Alla that.

I have no doubt whatsoever that the big corps are going to jump on these and we'll be using them daily to get to any & all big brands online.

First WF member with their own TLD is baller supremo!

Edit: It went through: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/20/us-internet-names-idUSTRE75G49W20110620

This was really inevitable. While it seems like a cash-grab when you consider existing large brands all have their own domain, the reality is that there aren't a ton of great .com names still available for newer companies, especially short ones, and squatters can wind up asking for more money than what ICANN is requesting for the new TLD's.

I for one am quite excited about this. I can now apply for cpa.goat

Also consider this: Type-ins are huge portion of traffic with .com

*.planters and *.KFC just aren't going to get any type-ins... This traffic really is too specific and not searcher friendly. (For many years, perhaps not forever.)
