" U.S. government officials are bracing for the rating agency Standard & Poor’s to downgrade the country’s credit as early as this evening or take other possible action, according to someone familiar with the matter.
Throughout Friday, markets were rife with speculation that S&P, which has had a negative outlook on the U.S. since April 18, would downgrade the country’s credit from its current triple-A level.
On July 14, S&P put the government on a credit watch with negative implications, meaning there was at least a one in two chance the U.S.’s long-term debt would be downgraded within 90 days.
An S&P spokesman declined to comment on any possible plans for a downgrade or statement later Friday.
On Tuesday, both Fitch and Moody's backed their triple-A rating on the U.S.—but with caveats."

This is just a rumor at this point imo. Haven't seen any sources say anything about it other than it's a possibility.

S&P response was "no comment".

Also seems unlikely they would announce it Friday evening or during the weekend.

Edit:

Oh, I missed the part where it said "according to someone familiar with the matter".

If that's the case and it's true, maybe S&P gave the gov't a heads up that they are about to downgrade.

This is on CNN (tv) right now. Sounds like S&P sent notice to the White House saying they were going to downgrade. WH responded saying their analysis was off. S&P said they will look it over.

I would place a large bet saying the US credit rating will be downgraded within the next 12 months, because that's what those in power want. Disintegrate the middle class, so there's only poor and rich. All policies for well over a decade have been geared towards this.

I don't think that's what the rich want. Or, at least, that's not what they should want. Capitalism is powered by consumers, and without a middle class, consumerism breaks down. At the end of it all, we'll all be broke, no?

But I don't think those in power are looking that far ahead. I would imagine the short term gains you can get from eliminating the middle class now are pretty lucrative.
