Movies Suck Nowadays!

I just want to point out what our film industry has become and the audience it now caters to.

This Week:

1 Rise of the Planet of the Apes -- Another stupid sequel...who cares?
2 The Smurfs -- Kids movie. Not interested
3 Cowboys & Aliens -- Might've been interested, if it was any good...but I heard it wasn't.
4 The Change-Up -- Dumb-ass broad comedy.
5 Captain America: The First Avenger -- Like we need another comic book movie!
6 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 -- More shit for kids and young adults.
7 Crazy, Stupid, Love -- Chick flick. Not fucking interested.
8 Friends With Benefits -- Chick flick. Same as above.
9 Horrible Bosses -- Original premise. Would see.
10 Transformers: Dark of the Moon -- More shit for kids.
11 Zookeeper -- Even more shit for kids.
12 Cars 2 -- Another kids' flick. Shocker.

So as an adult male, I'm basically stuck with 1-2 choices. What a fucking joke. No wonder I no longer go to the movies.

Maybe if the idiots of this country would stop going to see all this crap, we'd have better films being made...original films...instead of recycled ideas and sequels.

With the way things are now, the only chance of a great film being made is if it's by Scorsese, P.T. Anderson, The Coen Brothers, David Fincher, or maybe one or two other talented directors who are allowed to make whatever movie they want. Everything else that's made is made because it has a built in audience that assures the asshole who greenlights the project won't lose his corner office to another asshole.

Basically, the entire industry nowadays is run by fear.
 


Horrible Bosses was one of the few movies I've seen in theaters this year, and I thought it was fucking fantastic. But I agree with you, 99% shit. I can't understand why my friends are willing to pay $10+ to see the same recycled junk.

$10 holy shit better break out the 401k... how dare they spend that insane amount of money for 60-120 minutes of entertainment. WTF is going on here? has WF became a place for shitty poor people to complain? I remember when the biggest issue here was trying to decide between a lambo and a maserati // or who hated ryan eagle more.
 
Just got back from seeing planet of the apes. Didn't really like it :(

It's a prequel actually. Judging from the scores on IMDb (8/10) and RottenTomatoes (81%), it's a pretty good movie.

And it has Freida Pinto in it!!
 
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is not a prequel, or sequel, ... I guess you could call it a reboot. But they are avoiding that categorization.

It was good though.
 
You're speaking the truth OP - we're down to about 2 or 3 'main stream' releases per year that are worth going to see.

I just recently watched 127 hours - I knew of the real life event it was based on but was convinced it would be totally shit unless you're 16 years old.

Was actually decent - and I thought about this for a while. My conclusion was that the real life event didn't allow them to insert bullshit into the film, there was no room for it while keeping to the story so they just made a film which relied on acting and the basics of movie making.

And it works!

3D, CGI and the fact you don't need to be good at acting to be in movies has fucked movie making.
 
Correct would be - Hollywood mainstream movies suck. There are a lot of good movies made outside of HW and from time to time even HW releases some gems.

If you can call it entertainment. I suppose some people prefer to escape by rewatching the same mind-numbing story lines time and time again.

Sure, $10 isn't much, but you should also take opportunity costs into consideration. Not only the time lost, but also the crap that will be taking up your precious mental energy. I'm not opposed to doing things for pure entertainment, but if I'm going to doing something for pure entertainment, I'd like to to enrich my life in at least some little way.

I'll admit, I'm nitpicking a bit here, but surely you don't believe that spending $10 to watch little CGI blue people for an hour and a half is worth it? Parents excluded of course.

That's another thing. CGI has made it possible for Hollywood to spew shit from their asses at an alarming rate.
 
Totally agree, i myself havent enjoyed many movies that have come out the past few years - makes you start to feel old
 
This is what camcorders and youtube are for.

We need to start making our own movies, low budget yet grandiose plots. Improvised special effects never get old either.
 
lol i actually picked that one to watch hoping it might be good, and yeah, again, whatever! - i mean it wasnt HORRIBLE but not great

Planet of the Apes was surprisingly very good and is a reboot/prequel rather than a sequel.

I watched Bridesmaids with the wife yesterday and thought it was one of the most cringe-worthy movies I have ever seen. It was like one long awkward silence on a bad blind date. It wasn't because it was a "chick flick" it was just shit. Wife hated it too. I can't believe it got an IMDB score of 7.5 and Metacritic score of 75%. I even read some of the postings on the IMDB board about it and people were calling for it to be nominated for an Oscar!!?!?! It's worst feature was it's drawn out scenes, that remind me of Saturday Night Live. If you make a funny joke end it quickly don't draw it out over 5 or 6 minutes, it goes from funny to stupid.
 
I kinda liked Bridesmaids actually, but it might have something to do with my unhealthy obsession with Rose Byrne
