So I'm lookin for a new laptop after my 3y/o laptop stopped working on me.
Appreciate all the help I can get. I had my eyes on the Dell XPS 15z but that one makes loud fan noise and overheats.

Here's my spec:

  1. Not an Apple
  2. Doesn't overheat
  3. Light/travel friendly
  4. Isn't noisy (the fan on most of the laptops I've been lookin at are extremely loud for some reason).
Any recommendation? I don't care about the price.

I really don't want to be sucked in to using a Mac.

Is there an alternative?

have you considered the Macbook Pros or the Airs.

Oh shit. you said "not Apple"

No.

Just kidding.
The Thinkpad T series are pretty swell. I use it for some Windowsy stuff.
I have used Toshiba before I converted to Macism, and have only good words for Toshiba. Get something that is Made In Japan though, if you are going to go for Toshiba. Not sure how it is Now. Also Vaio.

Meh, I'd go with the 15" option I posted above. Cheaper, more powerful, and only 1 lb. heavier.

Look at the Asus Republic of Gamers series laptops. Top notch for a reasonable price. Just shop around on the price.

This is the exact model I use, nice rig: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/G73SW-A1-Republic-Gamers-17-3-Inch-Gaming/dp/B004I1J864/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1313386063&sr=8-4]Amazon.com: ASUS G73SW-A1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black): Computers & Accessories[/ame]

Hm, this looks great! Imma check them out.

No complaints at all?

I've the 17". It's heavy, but it's a fucking beast and it is very quiet. I haven't been able to slow it down yet, even when testing with Crysis.

I've had my eye on it for quite some time. Probably gonna buy it before this tax year is over.

Edit: I don't know if it's the best bang for your buck as I haven't been following computers closely for quite some time. But, it seems pretty powerful, has a SSD, and is thin and sexy. Get's a thumbs up from me.

Not many really. It looks cool, has good specs, back-lit keyboard, good screen, runs pretty quite and cool. No issue working with it sitting on your lap and getting too hot, I do it all the time, get's a little warm but nothing more than that.

I almost always work with it plugged in, but I guess if it had a negative it would be the ~3-4 hour battery life when you don't have it plugged in. However that is expected out of a gaming level rig.

Only other thing than that I had to do some hacking around to get the back-lit keyboard to come on in Ubuntu a few months ago, however latest kernel should support it.

Looks nice, but retardedly overpriced.
