Any good laptop that isn't an Apple?

I'm in the process of phasing Laptops out of my life.

I've got a custom rig desktop that I do all my heavy computing on, but all of my laptops are too big and heavy and fragile for the other things I need them to do: Be portable.

So a Tablet and a desktop will be the future for me... no more laptops at all... Tablets and smartphones can do everything you need to do on the go.

This is what I've been doing for a while now. If there's ever something I can't do on a tablet, I just remote desktop into my main PC at home and use it. Fuck carrying around a laptop.

Stop over thinking. If you need osx, get apple. If not -- any of the above will do a stellar job, especially if you're not a hardcore gamer.

Or if you want a laptop that won't be completely unusable after some jackass
kicks the cord.

I've phased laptops out of my life. I currently use a tablet and a desktop I built. I've also taken it a step further and I use mostly cloud services (dropbox, google docs, google voice voip, etc. etc.). Every service I've ever used in the past across multiple platforms works seamlessly (sync etc.) and perfectly across these two devices. I really only use the desktop when I need to "finalize" a project or do some heavy coding (multi-monitor setup is infinitely more productive than a small tablet display for coding).

Pretty sure Google owns me right now but I'm loving the luxury and productivity of the whole setup. Sometimes I wonder if it's their plan to monopolize... everything related to technology.

On a side-note, I considered one of those Google chrome books at one point but those are just fucking stupid. Gimped hardware at the price of a half-decent netbook or ultraportable, with literally no advantages? No thanks. I can accomplish everything those have to offer with android apps anyway.

If you haven't made the switch to a tablet, start looking into it. With a simple bluetooth keyboard (or even a full-sized USB keyboard if you're not a masochist) and a decent folding tripod it's easily the most versatile and convenient piece of tech I own. Expect some awesome advances in tablet tech coming in 2012 as well.

This is interesting. I've been out of the loop with tablets as well, have there been any recent (or near future) developments happening? Is there any particular bang for the buck tablets out there that will be somewhat future-proof?

Good, Apple is overpriced shit anyways. Now I might be able to get something along those lines and not feel like a tool, oh and it'll be cheaper. :smokin:

"Someone copied Apple's design and exact specs, GOOD APPLE DESERVED IT FUCK THEM"

LOL, I know what you mean... My smartphone alone ties me to my google accounts in more ways than anybody should be comfortable with... But I agree it's a new level of productivity.

I've recently rethought my position on chromebooks and agree. I think a tablet can do everything they can do better minus the hardware keyboard, but carrying a hardware keyboard will never be an acceptable tradeoff for a portable terminal.

PS: Just heard a rumor today that iPad 3 will be out around Thanksgiving time.

This is correct.

However, not sure how this is going to end up with a lawsuit, it's just a computer. And both companies have been making a variety of computers for a while.

So I see this as moot.

Thanks to this thread, my Lenovo Thinkpad x220 just arrived in the mail today. :)

Man, this thing is legit, nice keyboard, nice specs, lighter than MBA, with better keyboards, upgrade-able everything, good battery life (7 hours+) upgrade-able to 20 hours. OMG, I'm having an orgasm as I type this.

This is exactly what I wanted. Fast, ultra-portable setup with excellent battery life that isn't an Apple! The military tested carbon fibre casing is a bonus!
